WHAT ARE THE KEY GLOBAL ISSUES OF OUR TIME?

When we implement a global education program, we must necessarily address within its curriculum the critical global issues that we humans confront in our time -- and the coming future. It is the realization that we must resolve these transnational global issues, that has forced even entrenched nationalists to understand and accept the need for a global focus on education and planetary problem solving.

Some educators prefer to address these global issues within the framework of an existing curriculum, infusing certain issues into the scope and sequence of existing courses (environmental degradation within Biology or Earth Science; energy issues within Economics; nuclear proliferation within Government or Political Science, etc.) One advantage of this approach is that it creates minimum disruption to the existing curriculum. In some situations this is all that a global educator can do, given the inflexibility of many curriculum planners.

It is most often better, however, to create a dual-pronged approach: infusing critical global issues within the existing courses, while at the same time creating a separate course on "Global Issues" or "Global Perspectives." This provides maximum flexibility in the selection of issues to be studied and allows sufficient time for the analysis and discussion of difficult, complex issues.

When teachers communicate and collaborate with one another with respect to the consideration of global issues in the classroom, students have the advantage of confronting issues from different perspectives and from different levels of analysis.

Whichever method is followed, the question remains: Which issues should be included in the curriculum? Some local or regional flexibility is needed. In the USA, for instance, the war in Afghanistan may constitute a national priority; in East Africa, piracy in the high seas might take precedence. Nevertheless, there is a core of issues of inescapable global significance that should be a part of every global curriculum. I will identify below my own selection of the top five current issues of global significance, at the same time that I invite all readers to comment and amend the list based on their own experience and opinions. There is no magic to the number "five." In effect, it is an arbitrarily small number to encourage discussion and hard choices in the selection process. The real list for a course on Global Isues could be two or three times longer.

In my opinion, a first, unifying core for all other issues considered must be the ABSENCE OF RESPECT FOR BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS IN TODAY'S GLOBAL REALITY. The analysis and discussion of a human rights paradigm will establish an ethical foundation on which to weigh all other issues considered. The definition of this human rights paradigm is made easier by the existence of many United Nations agreements and treaties that most nations of the world have accepted as a standard of acceptable human behavior -- even if in practice most nations violate multiple provisions of these accords on a regular basis.

At the very core of these UN agreements are the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Establishing this human rights framework should be an initial priority of any global education program.

A second unavoidable issue is the ongoing revolution in gender roles that we can refer to as "THE FEMALE AWAKENING" -- possibly the greatest social revolution in human history. If we consider the extent of its direct and indirect impact on the entire human species and the restructuring power of the ongoing changes on all human societies, we must take note and help our students understand these revolutionary changes taking place in their lifetime. While it is true that this revolution is not affecting all human societies in the same measure and at the same time, it is also obviously true that no human society will escape the impact of the "Female Awakening."

The male domination of human society is over. The power of communications and transportation infrastructures will ensure that all corners of the world will soon have to adapt to the new human reality. The questions that still remain relate to the specifics of how the change will take place and the societal accommodations to the new order of gender equality. Not even the bulwarks of religious dogma will be able to withstand the impact of the female awakening.

A third issue of paramount importance is the dehumanizing impact of POVERTY, HUNGER AND DISEASE in the world. Poverty is at the core of hunger and disease -- as well as of overpopulation. Our students must confront the inhuman realities surrounding this issue. In previous posts we have discussed the need to develop "basic human empathy" to help our students understand and feel the destructive impact of abject poverty.

A fourth issue of paramount global importance is the ongoing and impending CLIMATE CHANGE, including global warming. Since so much has been written on this subject, I will not expand further at this point. Let us simply agree that -- given the scientific data easily available -- any teacher who at this point believes that climate change is not real, or that human impact has not been a significant contributor to the crisis, is not a teacher who should be teaching in a global curriculum.

My fifth issue is NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION. There are few things that political opponents around the planet normally agree on. However, whether we ask leaders of the USA, Russia, the EU, China, India or Pakistan, nuclear proliferation will regularly be mentioned as the top danger in an already dangerous world. We should listen and take note. The USA remains the only nation to have actually used nuclear weapons against an enemy's population; this unenviable record may be shattered if vertical and horizontal nuclear proliferation are allowed to continue.

While most national leaders are fully aware of the nuclear proliferation problem and have taken some limited measures to slightly diminish the dangers, the entrance of non-state actors --such as terrorist groups -- into the picture significantly complicates the future. If humanity is unable to deal with this problem, we are facing unimaginable disaster.

Those are my personal picks for the "top five" major global issues of our time. I realize that there are many others which could have been selected. One major barrier to the peaceful resolution of these issues is the lack of truly supra-national institutions that can speak and act for all humanity. We currently have an excess of nationalistic aggression and dogmatic fervor in the world. To counteract them, we have only international institutions (such as the UN) which provide a forum for all nations -- but are often not empowered to act effectively on behalf of all humanity. We must do better, either by creating new, truly supra-national organizations, or expanding the reach of the United Nations.

At the same time, we must develop better channels to listen to the voices of the weak and the oppressed, on whose behalf these supra-national organizations would labor.

The realization that we must move forward as a human species and seek trans-national solutions to global issues is seen in the partial success of the EU and other bodies; however, we must not delay. There is no guarantee that the dangers will wait for us.

All readers are invited to review my selections and make their own additions, subtractions, or changes as their knowledge and experience dictate. Feel free to discuss your views and agree or disagree in the "comments" section following this post.

I shall be looking forward to your comments!

  1. Part 1 of 3:

To begin with, it is utterly true that it is impossible to implement a global education program without addressing the main global issues of our time. The focus of such a global education is to empower students to be able to become global citizens that will possess the power to resolve these issues that, if not resolved, could mean the end of human civilization as a whole. Moreover, in terms of how to implement this essential global education, I most definitely agree that infusing a dual-pronged approach is the best alternative. A course of “Global Perspectives” of “Global Issues” is needed to truly be able to not only teach about the issues, but go into further discussion and truly analyze them and even try and determine possible solutions. This is something that is extremely difficult to do in a normal curriculum due to the limited time.
Now, as I review your list of the top five global issues, I think of the ones chosen in comparison with some of the other ones that are also out there. After much pondering, I have decided that cases for other issues can certainly be made, such as a case for why overpopulation and over-consumption, the urge to be urban, or the quest for infinite energy are important issues. However, I definitely do not believe there is any other issue that belongs in the list of the top five other than the ones already mentioned in this post. Initially, human rights are truly at the core of virtually any other global issue. The absence of any type of respect for human rights does not allow us to place an ethical foundation on which to work in. If this foundation is not established, it will be much more difficult to find solutions for most of the other issues that face our planet today. Also, the lack of acknowledgment or the lack of respect for human rights encompasses virtually every nation in the world. There is a lack of respect for human rights everywhere, and it occurs every day, even if all cases are not in plain sight. The second issue, the female awakening, may not seem like much to many in today’s society, yet it may encompass more people than any other issue on this list in terms of its direct effect. All of humanity is being affected by this change in position by women. The change is on-going and will not stop. In the future, as this global revolution continues, the world will change accordingly. In order to become leaders in the world of tomorrow, students (whether male or female) must not only learn of this issue but also acknowledge it and think about the effects it could possibly have on them as well as the whole human civilization in the future. An issue such as this one, which encompasses the entire planet, must surely be taught in any global curriculum.

  2. Part 2 of 3:

Furthermore, the third issue on this list is poverty, hunger, and disease. This is an issue that definitely cannot be excluded from any list of the top issues in the world. Millions and millions of people die because of poverty, hunger, and disease each year and thousands of children die each day due to the dreadful suffering of poverty. There are a billion children in poverty, and water problems affect more than half of all humanity. This is a problem that causes more deaths than anything else. Even much publicized wars have not taken as many lives as poverty has all over the world. This issue must not be overlooked, even for a second. Poverty, hunger, and disease cause a great part of the world’s population to live in absolute dreadful and horrid conditions. Not only does it have such a wide ranging effect, but it leads to other issues as well. Overpopulation can be attributed to poverty, for example. Poverty leads to more children and even a greater population. Additionally, climate change is another issue mentioned. Once again, this issue is of extreme importance and must be taught in a “Global Perspectives” or “Global Issues” class or any global curriculum. Although the effects of it may not be plainly visible to the eye at all times, the impact it has on the whole world is monumental. Just the mere fact that this issue affects all of humanity, all of the world, no matter where or how one lives, makes it one of the top global issues of our time. The innumerable catastrophic effects that climate change and global warming and continued pollution could cause must be taken into consideration. Students must learn how to deal with this problem now and must learn of the vast importance it possesses. They will be the ones that must fix this issue before the damage becomes irreversible; therefore, there is no way that this issue is not one of the top ones that must be taught in any global curriculum. Finally, the last issue that is mentioned is nuclear proliferation. It is happening now, and the words “unimaginable disaster” could very well fit into the future picture of the world if this issue is not resolved. This issue must be on any top five list because it can only take days for this one issue to lead to the death of everyone in this only planet we have, Earth. This issue does affect the entire planet, and it is truly global and must be resolved.

  3. Part 3 of 3:

As I mentioned beforehand, there are definitely other issues that are important and that a case can be made for. However, I truly do not believe any of them has the ability or the magnitude to top any of these five. All of these five encompass billions of people and they all basically affect, or can affect in the future, almost the entire population in the world. Maybe poverty, hunger, and disease will not affect everyone directly, as the people with a lot of money may not feel the direct effect, but it definitely will keep growing if action is not taken soon to find a resolution to this immense problem. All of these five issues have such great magnitude. It is horrible that the world has arrived at a point where a list like this can be made, but it is definitely a true and critical list. However, there is definitely hope for the future, and this hope lies with the students of the present and their being provided with a global education that will allow them to become empowered and help make the world a better place to live for all humanity. These students must be taught about the current, and possible future, global issues, especially about these issues mentioned in this post, the five most important ones out of the numerous ones there are. Only then can students make a difference in the near and distant future, by resolving these important issues and then moving on to the others, until all are resolved.

  4. I think the order of the Top 5 Global Issues list should go by how many people it affects and how much it is affecting them. I do not believe the Female Awakening should be second because even though it is an important issue that should be recognized by more, I do not believe it is affecting as many people like poverty and disease are affecting and getting blown up seems scarier. Poverty would be the first issue on my list because the world is getting poorer each day and there are millions of people dying each day because of it. It also brings a lot of other issues like disease and hunger so if this issue is resolved, the world would probably get much better because more than one issue would be resolved. The second issue would be nuclear proliferation because knowing that any country could blow us all up in a second is pretty scary and is a problem that should be resolved because it is a very serious and extremely dangerous and sensitive issue that affects everyone in the entire world since it has the power to end all humanity…The third issue would be the way things are going with the environment (which are obviously not good). This issue also affects everyone because of the climate change and all the resources that we humans are using up and are going to find new resources or start using them wisely. People have to realize that the Earth´s resources will not last forever and that they cannot take them for granted because when they run out we are all going to be in big trouble… The fourth issue would be human rights. Citizens throughout the world should recognize their rights and fight for them because it is very unfair that basic rights should be taken away from people. Last but not least would be over population and over consumption. This problem affects the whole world and the world population is quickly growing while our resources are also disappearing… And pretty soon if more people are not aware of these problems and do not quickly take action to try to resolve them then we will disappear quickly too.

  5. There are many issues and problems that people throughout the world are forced to deal with, some may be more problematic than others but all are still areas of great concern. The top five global issues that I believe to be most important are: Human Rights, Poverty, the Ecosystem, Overpopulation and Overconsumption, and the Female Awakening, many of these issues being mentioned in this post. Human Rights would be the most important issue as it is at the center of so many things. Rights of human beings in many countries are often disrespected and ignored without any thought about how humans have rights that they possess. People need to become more aware of the rights they have and the ability they have as well to fight for those rights. There needs to be more awareness and recognition of human rights because without it people will constantly be living unfair lives as so many of their rights are so often taken away.
Poverty comes second as it concerns so many people living in all different areas of the world. There are great numbers of people that live in poverty being unable to afford homes and food for their families. Areas where there is great poverty are often dirty forcing those who live in poverty to suffer through it all. There is disease and famine that those in poverty suffer from, numerous deaths occur all the time just because of poverty. Every single person has the right to live in safe and clean environments and the fact that so many are unable to do so is a reason why people must become more aware of the problem. Following Poverty comes an issue that many are already much aware of: the Ecosystem. It is a well known fact that our world is changing and it isn’t necessarily changing for the better. There is much harm being done to the environment we all live in and people must do something about it before it’s too late. People need to realize that the Earth’s resources cannot be taken for granted and must be used wisely as these resources can run out at any time in the nearby future. When this will be realized, destruction of the planet might come to an end.
The fourth issue would be Overpopulation and Overconsumption as day by day it is also becoming a problem. Overpopulation has many effects on the population such as the spread of famine and disease. With more people the amounts of resources decrease and environmental destruction is caused, effects that are trying to be prevented. Overconsumption is causing things to finish faster than they can be produced and can cause problems in the future. Our resources will disappear and our planet will reach its carrying capacity which doesn’t seem too far away considering the rate at which the population grows. It is a problem that affects everyone and needs proper attention for something to be done about it. The last issue would be the Female Awakening which has been one of the biggest things to happen. It has an impact on everyone whether it is directly or indirectly, it has been causing change no matter what. People need to become more aware of this issue as well as things are no longer the same; females are now able to control things rather than just males. People need to become more aware of all of these issues to be able to make a difference, without being taught or learning about these issues no solution will be able to be made.

  6. I completely agree with the statement that critical global issues should be involved in the student curriculum. It is important to keep students aware of such issues that are affecting our world today. Class discussions on these global issues helps a student become involved and voice their opinion which is important. It is especially impertinent that a student develops their own opinion on these issues. Now, concerning the most important issues that should be discussed I believe that the five issues chosen were absolutely the most important.
The first issue chosen was the absence of respect for basic human rights in today’s global reality. I believe that this issue is tremendously important. Human rights are practically what are keeping this world from crashing down. Without human rights unfortunately we would not be able to get anything done in the first place. We would not have the right to voice our opinions without getting persecuted. We would also be enslaving others just by difference in sex, color or religion. Basically, the world would be a complete disaster. It is absolutely necessary for all students to be familiar with basic human rights.
The Female Awakening is also one of the most important global issues. It is important to make students realize that they are in fact right in the middle of one of the most important revolutions of our time. People all over the world are finally realizing that women are in fact equal to men and that difference in sex really doesn’t mean one has to be inferior to the other. Our generation is finally letting women have power in a world that has been ruled only by men for ages. This awakening will affect everyone and everything changing all for the better of our future and creating complete equality between the sexes.
Furthermore, poverty, hunger and disease were mentioned as an important global issue and in fact it is. Students need to realize that the world isn’t as well off as most people think. There are many people dying in poor countries for ridiculous reasons as poverty, hunger, and disease. I say this is ridiculous because there is enough food for everyone in the world to be fed and it is incredible to believe that hundreds of people are dying because of it. We can definitely help solve these problems, but we need people to be aware of them first which is why it is important to discuss such issues like these in the classroom.
The issue of climate change is also one of the most affecting issues for us today. If we keep treating the earth the way we have been doing for centuries then we will end up destroying all of earth once and for all, and then what do we do? I also absolutely agree with the statement that if a teacher at this point still believes that there is no such thing as climate change, and that human impact was not a significant contributor to the crisis, then they should definitely not be teaching in a global curriculum.
Finally, the last global issue mentioned was nuclear proliferation. This is a very important issue due to the fact that it is one of the most dangerous issues our world is exposed to. Leaders of various countries use the production of stronger and bigger nuclear weapons as a form of competition. What they don’t realize is that it is extremely dangerous and countries should not be allowed the production and especially not the use of these weapons. More and more countries are trying to get their hands on these dangerous weapons and if we continue to allow countries to make or have them then we could be looking at the end of the world quicker than we thought, since any argument or hate between countries could spark leaders to want to use them. Students must be aware of issues of these extents. The five global issues presented are in my opinion the top five most important issues and should be added to the student curriculum.

  7. Human Rights
    Poverty
    Environmental Protection
    Ethics [no right or wrong]
    Self esteem of our students

Earth; Humans have inhabited it for millions of years. We often like to think of ourselves as the most intelligent of the animal kingdom yet looking at the problems in modern society we are inclined to question just how intelligent we really are.

When designing a curriculum it is important to take many factors into account including flexibility, cooperation if working with other teachers, time, etc. Regardless, I agree that the dual-pronged approach would be the better alternative.

When choosing my top 3 I opted to go with more general topic thus allowing more flexibility in the teaching curriculum.

Human rights for example encompass such issues as the female awakening, religion, dictatorships and countries political stance as well as constitutions and history. Lack of respect for human rights has led to many socio-political dilemmas in the past and will unquestionably lead to more in the future if ignored.

Poverty is also a general term and important topic. As a result of insufficient capital countless people worldwide starve or die from curable disease that they cannot afford the cure to. Poverty is a rapidly spearing epidemic. It does not discriminate against gender, color or race. Anyone can become poor especially in the heat of the global recession we are faced with today. An issue such as this, one might discuss the political aspect as well as the physiological.

Environmental protection embraces key topics such as nuclear proliferation, animal extinction, habitat loss, pollution, renewable energy sources, even terrorism to a certain extent. It is vital that future generations under the momentous role that the environment plays in society and everyday life.

The examination of Ethics, unlike my first 3 choices is not a global crisis (directly) though a crucial part of decision making. In a global curriculum, student must have a thorough understanding of the problem to fully comprehend the implications as well as origin of the problem. Students must also be opened minded to different culture, religions and races through examination of ethics this can be possible.

The final issues I choice focus more the individual student than on an actual global crisis; IF students are meant to be empowered through this curriculum then they must have the self confidence to do so. Students with low self-esteem are less inclined to be active citizens because feel like their opinions and/ or actions do not matter. Apathy is rapidly increasing disease.

  8. Although I agree that the five issues stated in this post affect our generation, I do not agree each one is necessarily the most important one facing this day in age. I definitely concur that human rights are a key global issue. Human rights have been addressed since the beginning of human civilization, and yet these rights continue to be violated. As a species, we have to learn how to respect one another, and if we want to progress, there needs to be absolute respect of human rights. Human rights also encompass other issues that were stated in this post. The female awakening may be considered as part of human rights. The first article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood”. If this is so, then the female awakening, like civil rights, may be discussed as part of the human rights subject. The Declaration also states that “Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex…” Females are equal to males according to the Declaration, and a part of the female awakening will also be a realization of these human rights.
In addition, the female awakening cannot stand as an issue facing our time on its own is because it is difficult to discuss the issue in a thorough global manner. The female awakening has developed differently in different corners of the world. There are even places that have no trace of this movement. So in conclusion, I believe this topic should be discussed as a subtopic of human rights.
The subject of Access to Education could then be a candidate to replace the one previously discussed. Without proper education, there undoubtedly exists poverty, hunger, disease and numerous lists of other dehumanizing situations. Overconsumption and overpopulation are also byproducts of ignorance. Due to lack of education, people cannot obtain a proper job, and they are left living in poverty creating a negative domino effect. This can go on for generations with no end in sight creating a vicious cycle. We live in a time of incredible technology yet millions of people are illiterate. In my opinion it is imperative to know how to read in order to be exposed to the world. Lack of education can lead to oppression which then starts a downward spiral of violations. Ignorance is the culprit to countless problems in our time which must be resolved. Governments can only do so much for its citizens. Even international organizations are limited. Then it is up to each and every one of us to wake up and realize the importance of education, not only in our backyard, but across the entire globe.
Climate change is an ongoing, eminent issue. By now, we have all seen the effects of it, and as stated in the post, there is no denying that it is happening. It is obviously one of the greatest issues affecting our world today which we are responsible for fixing. The longer it goes unresolved, then the bigger the problem will be for generations to come.
Nuclear proliferation is also an issue I agree with. A country with nuclear arms can bring mass destruction to others, as evident after the two atomic bombs deployed by the United States during World War II. In fact, more than half a century has passed and the effects are still evident in many places. Presently there are countries such as Iran which are becoming more nuclear proliferate bringing instability to that region of the world and concern to everyone.

  9. It is incredibly important to state the fact that these five issues are not the only ones affecting all human life. Nevertheless, it is true that these issues are at the top of the list. In my educated opinion, proverty should be on the top of the list, for it is this issue that originates many of the other issues. When someone is poor, they have less oportunity of reciving a proper education, or receiving an education at all. Consequently, they can be more easily manipulated by the corrupt governments of their countries. So, they would not be able to fight for their human rights. Then, human rights becomes an issue. When this corrupt governors do not allow less educated people be aware of their rights. As a result, human rights should be in second place.
Now, it is a hundred percent veridic that the Female Awakening should be in the list. This social movement it cannot bring nothing but improvement to the human race. Just think about it. During most of the human history we have been working with just the half of our potential. This becomes an issue not because it is wrong, but because in some parts of the world women are not been allowed to awake. They remain oppresed. So, the issue is the oppression of the women. Consequently, actions must be taken to free woman of all nations. That way human would be able to work at their full potential.
The next issue, Nuclear ploriferation, should come before climate change. It is not because climate change is less importante. On the contrary they are of the same importnace, but a nuclear catasthrophy has a higher chance of occuring one of these days, than the end of the world due to climate change. The delicacy of nouclear prolliferation comes because of the reason that it can fall easily into the hands of terrorist groups. Once they get in their possession we cannot be sure how they may use it. There are really terrying chances that they would use it to spread their terror all over the world destroying cities in just minutes.
Even though climate change will not eliminate us in just a few minutes like an atomic bomb, we have to really place close attention to this silent menase. The humans is the only race that can actually destroy itself. How come that the "most advanced" race can do such a thing? Well, we are stubborns about change, so just because all our lives we have been using cars and contiminating, they find it difficult to adapt to the new situation and start conervating energy and not pollluting. As a result, the solution to the problem should be to accomplish the difficult task of changing everyones daily habits so that we are more energy efficient, and environmentaly friendly. This should give us sufficient time to discover new ources of energy that will not destroy the place we live in.
Most of this issues as it is written in this article could be resolved by the formation supranational organizations. Maybe the lack of supranational organizations should be consider a global issue, for it could resolve most, if not all, the global issues present today, but humans so far decide not to. Global teachers should start raising awarness of how supra national organizations could solve most of the issues. This would result that in future generation people are going to be aware of the power of these organizations, making it very possible to create them and make this world a much better one.

  10. The five issues that have been chosen are without a doubt critically important in our global world. The magnitude of these topics should all be implemented in any form of a global curriculum. However, my main five topics are somewhat different than the list set forward by this blog.
To start off, I do believe that Human Rights should definitely be a main topic. Human Rights affect an immense amount of people world wide. The gravity of this issue is too colossal to simply surpass. Severe improvements of the enforcement of Human Rights need to be implemented. Throughout the world there is case after case of Human Rights violations, and it doesn’t stop there. In order for Human Rights to be respected in our world we need extreme action. People are simply not astounded by the amount of Human Rights violations, and this is what needs to change. The severity of this issue needs to be shown and a plan of action has to be set forth. It cannot be done through a sluggish process.
Secondly, Hunger, Poverty and Disease are yet another topic that must be treated as a key global issue. As said beforehand in the blog, hunger and disease do not exist without poverty – it is the source of it all. This issue is perhaps the most significant next to Human Rights. This issue must be showcased, not timidly or precociously – but abruptly and in its worst form. It needs to be shown to students in the rawest form possible. The only way to get them to truly empathize and understand the magnitude of the issue is for them to see the truth – to see the painstakingly horrid diseases ravaging people across the world, the frail malnourished and impoverished children that walk the streets of poor countries themselves everyday – the extreme poverty that is present everyday. This is what needs to be shown to students to have them become enveloped and deeply concerned with the issue.
The third issue that I believe is a crucial global issue is Climate Change. Let’s face it – if the world obliterates or is engulfed by water there will be no world to aid or improve. This issue needs to be a daily topic and ways to improve it must be discussed. The bottom line is – this issue cannot be dropped, it has to be repeated until it is embedded in our brains. No world = absolutely nothing to change for the better.
Another key issue that is extremely important is the rapid growth of technology. Day by day the developments in technology become vaster and increasingly advanced. Students need to be aware of those advancements can affect our global economy for better or worse. The technology that could be invented in the future could greatly impact our world. In a matter of years robots and other mechanical devices can enormously affect us. It is not a matter of if but when. With these advancements comes the question of how great these developments will affect us and to what degree. The constant change in this field is something that we need to acknowledge and learn more about.
Lastly, The Female Awakening is becoming an increasingly more important topic. The major aspect that needs to be discussed is awareness. People need to realize that women are becoming more significant in society than they ever were. A plethora of changes are being made and many women are feeling more empowered. The recent changes in the Female Awakening are what need to be discussed in classrooms as well as the steps taken to get where we are today. It must be reviewed in a way that enables students to grasp the enormity of the issue and what they can do to advocate feminism. It needs to be a part of every global curriculum in order to expedite its growth.

  11. Part 1 of 3
When choosing issues that should be at the top of a Global educators list of necessity for his or her students it is most definitely not an easy task. Considering the vast amount of issues that exist throughout our beautiful yet far from perfect home-planet Earth- one begins to take note of that yes there most definitely an immense amount of issues that we face on a daily basis and that threaten our very existence on Earth. However, the real challenge for a global educator wouldn’t be to incorporate every single issue into their curriculum but in actuality to choose the ones that in essence are the core issues which result in the creation of the numerous amount of problems we as a human race face on a daily basis. Think of it through this analogy, there is a drug dealing problem is your local community - there are five main dealers for which everyone receives there drugs from; if the local police where to find these five people they would in essence be a giant step closer to eliminating the drug problem in that particular local community. This compares to global issues in a rather similar way because in my opinion many problems can be stopped completely or severely cut down if other problems are tackled and taken down. Due to this logic of mine, I can say that there are some key issues on our planet that in essence branch out and create other issues - thus leading to the idea that a global educator should focus on those "key" issues so that their students can be aware of the real issues that are threatening our existence.
When cutting it down to a selection of only five (which is very hard to do considering there are easily 15 or 20 issues I can think of that any student should not only be aware of but knowledgeable in that area) I would say that the same issues you chose I would also choose to incorporate into a global perspectives course. These issues like you stated are Poverty, Human Rights, the Female Awakening, Nuclear Proliferation, and Climate Changes. However I couldn't put these five topics into any sort of order of importance due to the fact that in essence all of these are extremely important to Earth's continued existence as well as gains that we could potentially make as a society in order to better our experience on Earth.

  12. Part 2 of 3
Now anyone whose reading my comment may be wondering why it is that I would choose the same issues as Joseph despite the vast amount of issues I could choose from to incorporate into a global classroom, the reason is as previously mentioned - these issues are ones in which are key and can help to stop several other issues during the process of solving those alone. To begin with Poverty is in my opinion extremely important on a global level because in core it is the main factors which lead into other major problems such as hunger, disease, malnutrition, stress, and many other negative aspects on the human population. If a student is introduced to poverty they are also being introduced to many other core issues that indeed threaten our time on Earth. Poverty is a prime example of the analogy I made earlier on in this comment where it branches out to create many other problems that reach out to a large whole of our population. A second choice of mine would be Human rights - because like mentioned before human rights is not really a single issue - it’s an issue that branches out to create many other problems in society and until human rights is something that’s respected world wide the human race as we know it has a short and very problematic future coming its way. A global educator would literally HAVE to incorporate this issue into their class agenda in order to be successful in their teachings as we as humans need to establish a code in which we as an entire race see as practical and agreeable. My third pick, the Female Awakening, is simple. Our entire human population consists of two genders: Females and Males. So if our entire society functions off the minds of only half of our population wouldn't you agree that there is a lot of brain power and possible solutions too many problems that are being neglected because of the gender roles that had been created in the past? Woman are moving up in this world and their impact will and has made a difference up to this point in history, and it would only be obvious for a global educator to implement this ongoing revolution into their curriculum so that students are aware of the fact that they are taking place in what is in my opinion the single handedly most powerful social revolution that has occurred throughout our time on planet Earth.

  13. Part 3 of 3
The fourth issue, Nuclear Proliferation, is a tricky one - but nonetheless an issue that requires much attention. We as a human race should value our lives, and you would think we do, but when one looks at humans from an outsider’s perspective such as an alien you would think we didn’t. Take into consideration the fact that nearly every superpower on our planet has the ability to in essence destroy the entire human race as we know it - isn't that a problem? There has to be a way to remove this danger from Earth because otherwise it seems like our fate is one that’s an utter disaster. Last and equally as important as the rest is Climate Change. Climate change to some may seem like old news, to both teachers and students who have always heard their elders say "Miami is going to be underwater by the time you’re an adult..." at this point some treat it with much less respect than it deserves. Climate change is a core issue in our planet and not only creates many other problems we face as a race - but in fact threatens our very existence. Climate change is very real despite how long it’s been around, and it is vitality for a teacher to reinstate the importance of this issue into student’s minds.
All in all there are honestly so many global issues of which I could speak about, such as energy crisis, overpopulation, affects of technology on society, etc. But in reality there are some issues that take priority over others due to their ability to branch out and create even more problems. As a global educator one has a very important task ahead of them when choosing what issues are worthy to enlighten your students on; however so I hope I've helped someone with my opinions and wish any global educator the best of luck.

  14. I agree that being apart of a global education program should consist with recognizing the global issues we face today to be educated on the meaning of working together to analyze an issue and resolve it with as much understand as possible. The top five global issues mentioned are Human Rights, Poverty, Ecosystem, Overpopulation and Overconsumption, and the Female Awakening. And I agree that they are all critically affecting the entire population today but some are more important than others because of their direct affect to people.

Human Rights would be the first and most important issue because it seems to be the roots of all the issues we are facing. In many countries, people are kept unaware of their rights and taken advantage of. The population needs to be more aware of what they are entitled to because if not they are going to be disrespected and mistreated. Poverty would be the second issue. A vast percentage of families in the world are suffering from poverty and are unable to afford a descent living. People can’t afford to maintain a home or buy food for their families. Numerous deaths are caused by people in poverty. Families can’t pay for medical bills because they can’t afford health insurance. The value of the dollar seems to decrease everyday and more and more people are falling in debt and foreclosures. This issue increases in importance everyday and needs to be addressed massively.

After Poverty comes an issue that everyone is aware of and is being taken are of one step at a time: the Environment, or Ecosystem. “Earth is a fragile place that needs to be handled with care.” Non-renewable resources are becoming harder to find and will eventually become completely unavailable. This could be a good thing because it has caused us to use safer materials that don’t harm our environment. Pollution is a major issue that affects populations of other animals and causes damage to our food chains. Nobody is looking forward to the theory of “2012” to come true.

Overpopulation and Overconsumption is the fourth issue. Over population causes a lot of migration because of space in certain areas of unavailability to find a stable job. Overconsumption is also caused by Overpopulation. Overconsumption is the use of resources at a rate that exceeds the ability of natural processes to replace them. This is the kind of issue that with time becomes more direct to the population and will then need a lot of attention. The last issue is the Female Awakening which is based on Feminism which is a political discourse aimed at equal rights and legal protection for woman. It is an issue that has been occurring for decades but has been addressed little by little. Women have a lot more respect now than they did about 50 years ago. It isn’t such an important issue during this time especially when there are bigger things going on. With time and more understanding of how to solve such global issues, these problems will be taken care of. People are thankfully getting more involved and making the world a better place to live.

  15. In my opinion, the real main issues that not only are the most important internationally, but should also be dealt with as quickly as possible. These issues must be dealt with in a way that not only one country puts in maximum effort, but the whole world.
To begin with, the world’s top priority today would definitely be Climate Change. You’re not only wrong if you say this issue is “overrated” or “too far stretched”, you’re DEAD wrong. Mr. Lamas is correct when stating that there is countless information out there to prove massive climate change and was smart to not include any of the information referring to climate change because of the fact that it would’ve made the blog far too long to read. But let me assure you that this issue is so important that it cannot be stressed enough to the world, and yet, people just don’t seem to get it. In the next 30 to 50 years, half of the world’s land masses are going to be underwater due melting ice caps and guess what? When most of the world’s population is extinct due to massive hurricanes and immense tsunamis, and the world is many degrees hotter than it is now, there isn’t going to be time to care about any of the other issues that one thinks matter.
Climate change aside, the next important issue would be what Mr. Lamas believes is number one, Human Rights. This issue is extremely important not only because of the fact that, as humans, we are entitled to do whatever we please as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone or anything. As one might know, there are many countries in which human rights such as the freedom to speak freely or to think freely are not permitted. This is absurd because of the fact that denying these freedoms and rights is denying the very thing that makes us human. Why have the ability to speak up if you’re not even allowed to use it? Did you know that in many countries, there are foods that are illegal to eat? Not because they’re poisonous or dangerous, but because the government just doesn’t feel like letting the people eat them. Human rights should be given to everyone, no matter what race, color, or religion you’re from.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Next on the list would be finding an Alternate energy source(s). As one might know, gas prices are soaring and we’re now resorting to other energy resources such as coal in order to get energy, but this form of energy is not only non-renewable, but also a hazard to our environment. Why is gasoline so pricy these days? Well, think about it. There are 6.8 billion people in the world today. Let’s say that only 10% of them drive automobiles. That’s 680 million. The average amount of gasoline that a vehicle needs is around 15 gallons to fill it up. That’s 10.2 billion gallons of gasoline for all of those people. Not to mention the fact that the number of people that drive automobiles is constantly increasing. If statistics isn’t enough to change one’s mind about finding an alternate energy source, then maybe the fact that the more we use sources like gasoline and coal for energy, the more we damage our Earth, which brings us back to a main reason why we have such a crazy climate crisis on our hands. Of course, the obvious question is, “Well, if finding an alternate energy source would pretty much fix climate change, why is it number three on our list?” The answer to that is simple. I believe that climate change is an issue that one has to pay more attention to. Other than that, finding an alternate energy source is a very important issue.
Our next issue would be the obvious issue of Poverty. I’m not including hunger and disease with this issue because of the fact that, as stated in the blog, “Poverty is at the core” of both of these issues. By fixing poverty, hunger and disease slowly begin to fade by themselves. This issue is obviously important because it forms other issues such as violence, overpopulation, and as stated before, hunger and disease. Eliminating poverty means, in turn, scratching off many other issues along with it.
Our final issue would be the female awakening. This is our last issue because of the fact that it’s not really a very serious issue, not because of women being recognized as equals to men, but because of the fact that women are already equal to men. They are equal in a sense, because honestly women will never be completely equal to men for obvious reasons, but women will never be inferior to men and men will never be inferior to women. Simply put, they are equals. Now, the reason I believe that this issue is number five is because of the fact that the world is already aware of the change that is occurring. Due to the fact that women have already run for president and other reasons, the world is becoming aware of this so called awakening. It’s an important issue nonetheless because of the fact that there are still areas of the world that do not think of women as equals, but I believe that slowly it is occurring and it really isn’t an issue that really needs too much attention.
As “personal picks”, I believe these are the top five world issues that should be dealt with.

  17. Throughout history, the human race has ruthlessly treated its own people. Through wars, genocides, violence, crime, discrimination, and countless other atrocities, it seems that the human life has been devalued and the regard for human rights has been virtually nonexistent. The most crucial issue in our world is the abuse of human rights. All people deserve to be treated with respect and receive their basic unalienable rights, which ensure their health, safety, and dignity.

Coming in an extremely close second, poverty, hunger, and disease, is another important global issue. For a supposedly advanced and superior society, it is appalling that billionaires recline in the lap of luxury, while nearby millions starve to death. It is unacceptable to allow so many people to die from such trivial, basic needs (such as food), that everyone should have access too; especially since so many have these things in excess.

Overpopulation and overconsumption is the next vital problem. At the rate that the world’s population is rising and the rate at which it is consuming the earth’ resources, it is feasible to fear for the future of our planet and the human race. As we approach the earth’s carrying capacity, we must find alternatives to our current superfluous lifestyles, which are only leading to self destruction.

Self destruction seems to be a recurring theme in many of the global issues. Among these, is the destruction of the ecosystem. Our constant abuse of the environment is beginning to take its toll upon the earth in the form of climate change, extinct species, filthy air and oceans. Ironically, in harming the environment we are ultimately hurting our selves because we are living in the harmful conditions that we are creating and if the planet does not survive our abuse, we will all die.

Finally, the last prominent topic is the female awakening. For much of history, women have been undermined by men and forced to suffer under chauvinist societies. Now, for the first time in history, we are seeing a dramatic turn of events. As women claim higher positions in society and demand equal rights, they are inciting a monumental social revolution. Living in a society that is prone to discrimination and chauvinist tendencies, it is important that women claim their independence and power and grow as a people.

  18. Part 1
There are certainly numerable Global issues we must all consider as members of this planet. However, I believe that the Top Five main Global issues suggested on the blog were utterly the most imperative issues that we should consider, analyze, and implement in the student curriculum. Perhaps, the only thing I would modify would be the order of the importance of these five focal issues.
In my opinion the main Global issue all of us humans face at the moment is the lack of respect for basic human rights in today’s global reality. We have seemed to forget that we are all entitled to equal treatment as human beings on Earth. We are all members of this planet and no matter what race, color, or sex we should all have the right to fair and just living. Meaning if we all respected one another’s human rights in this planet instead of just thinking about ourselves, we might be able to avoid many of the current listless issues that worry us.
The next global issue I consider to be next in importance is climate change. Climate change is something that we must all take into account no matter where we live on Earth. We are aware that global warming has become an immense worry for our planet yet we seem to ignore the issue most of the time simply because it is not directly affecting us. Yet as the hole in the ozone layer gets bigger we will start seeing more changes in our atmosphere. So why wait and ignore what to do to help decrease the rate of pollution and global warming when we know that this is a vital issue? Are we waiting for something impacting to occur to open our eyes and make us realize that our planet is in danger? The results as we know so far are irreversible and we have been contributors to the crisis. So instead of thinking that matters will solve on their own or give up we should each look for ways in which we can provide help in our community and hope to slow down the effects. We only have only planet that will support human life, as we know it, and if we don’t take care of it we will leave many more problems for our future generations to face.

  19. Part 2
The third concerning issue on my belief is poverty, hunger and disease. Now the reason that these three were grouped as one main issue has to do with the close relation that they have. Poverty causes hunger and disease. Why do we have so much poverty in our world? There are several reasons for this issue which will take a whole new blog to explain. However, a main cause for poverty is the uneven distribution of wealth which again will relate to human rights. In many countries elites of people benefit on the wealth while the majority of the population lives under tremendous poverty. This unfair distribution of wealth is causing devastating results. There is not enough food to feed the people and therefore many are dying. The question is what is the government doing about it? Well the government is not much help in some cases since many times corruption takes place and these elites of people derive from the government itself. Of course these are not the only reasons for poverty yet how can we expect a country to improve its economic situation when the government steals from its own people.
Nuclear proliferation would take fourth place. As we know nuclear weapons are lethal and can cause terrible damage. These weapons are extremely dangerous to our world and should be destroyed. If we were to use them against each other it is possible we might destroy entire countries and produce irreversible damage and self destruction.
Last but not least, the female awakening is an issue that will affect us all at some point. Women have being oppressed in the past and even today some of them still are. The fact that women are human beings as well and deserve equal treatment disregarding their sex has been ignored for many years. Now women have decided to stand for themselves and be treated equally. Women continue to take jobs that were regarded as men labor and their rights are being respected much more than they were in the past. This issue is significant because women no longer will be dominated by man in the future as women continue to fight for their rights.
Overall, we have seen that all these issues are all significant to society and therefore shouldn’t be ignored. We must educate students with not only information about these issues but also make them aware of the several other conflicts that we face. That way we will not only be aware of what is going on in our world but take action to fix the issues and raise leaders that will hopefully make wise decisions for the benefit of our world.

  20. In addition to Mr. Lamas’ top five global issues that should be mentioned in the curriculum, the only issue I believe should be included in the top five is the global financial crisis. Unfortunately, money has transformed into becoming a major resource in the Earth; everything apparently is money nowadays. It has been about two years ago since the global economy has gone down, and yet there has been no solution to this issue. If there is more input regarding the global economy, there can be certain ways to fight this battle. Yes, the economy is a tough one to handle, but would people rather just struggle for the rest of their lives fighting for the money, or do people want the economy to be normal again? Notice how there is a certain connection to all of the issues around the world. We certainly need money to help most of today’s global issues. In climate change, for example, there needs to be some major technology made for the Earth to stop melting away. You need money to build. In terms of poverty, the people are losing their jobs, not being able to provide for a home or food. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. Imagine where we would go if there was no money for anyone anymore… We would go nowhere, but be stuck. All the people would do is fight for the money, and people are doing that today, so imagine…

  21. As a global citizen, I agree that the issues stated are the most important issues we face as a planet, but I disagree as to the order. I agree that the ABSENCE OF RESPECT FOR BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS IN TODAY'S GLOBAL REALITY is the most important issue we face, as the abscence of human rights encompasses more issues than we realize some times. As little respect for human rights opens the door for such issues as slavery, human trafficking, and even discrimination. In addition I find that if we want to move forward as human beings and a planet we have to be able to respect each others rights, so that human rights is a core issue in many of the problems we face today. However I disagree with the second choice made. Although it is something important impacting our modern society the fact that it is not necessarily harming anyone and is currently not at full speed makes me disagree with the opinion that it is more important than POVERTY, HUNGER AND DISEASE. Which is my second choice, as I think that it is these three things that are intercepting any significant advancement of humanity as a whole. As poverty, hunger, and disease keep sectors of south America, Africa, and other parts of the world from receiving the proper education to take part in any significant movement. These three factors block out the possible skills and contributions that those stuck in poverty could have contributed to humanity, which is why it is my second choice. CLIMATE CHANGE is my third choice due to the change I made in the list regarding the female awakening. I feel that climate change is a very important issue in our modern world, as we are at risk of harming our planet in such a way that our survival will be challenged. We are leading ourselves to a dead end and we know it,and there are things we could do to prevent it's advancement which is why I think it is so important.. My fourth choice is NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION as nuclear proliferation is an underlying danger. If nuclear weapons were to be used, not only would we harm our planet but take the lifes if many. A nuclear war would destroy not only those involved but would affect the climate and enviromental health of all the planet, which in the end could lead to many global deaths. The fact that this is a danger that is always existent makes me list it as one of the top 5 global issues, as it is unlikely that a country will warn the country which it is attacking with nuclear weapons. Finally my fifth choice is THE FEMALE AWAKENING as although it is not something that is harming human beings directly or that could one day do so, it is something that is revolutionizing our society. Females are finally asserting their position in society in parts of the world, and this is very important as this will affect the way in which the current young generation will live their lifes and will affect every part of humanity at some time which is why it is in my top 5. in conclusion regardless of order these are my top 5 as all this issues affect us, and some have serious potential danger for humanity.

  22. Part 1 of 2:
Out of all the monumental issues that are tremendously affecting our global community, it is difficult to pick just five of them, and prioritize them for the general public. Obviously, some issues are more important than others to different people but most of them affect us all, whether directly or indirectly. Either way, it is important for all of us not only to recognize these issues, but also to work towards better solutions as a community. These issues, in my opinion, are the most imperative ones facing us today, and are steadily advancing at an alarming rate, as they are worthy of being front-page news on every magazine and national newspaper.
The first one that is the most difficult to deal with, but is at the root of every situation, problem, and international dispute that foreign leaders come across. It is the violation of Human Rights all across the globe. These set of laws- which are treated as guidelines- are easily ignored by those with little or none moral and ethical values. These violations often cause detrimental consequences such as long-standing feuds between nations, wars that rage in unprotected villages, and unsettled disagreements between powerful foreign leaders. The basic fact is that once a person believes he/or she is above following these laws and respecting the rights of others, disregarding the fact that every single human being on this Earth is entitled to their own rights, he/or she then accumulates the power to commit all sorts of crimes. Take for instance, Joseph Kony, who is the driving force behind child soldiers in Uganda. He is violating most of the rights that these children have, and is subjecting them to the horrors of war and imprisonment at a young age. Although there are organizations to fight these violations, such as Invisible Children, there are still many steps to be taken in order to stop the atrocities occurring in these countries like Uganda.
The second global issue that has been affecting us for years, but has just suddenly become one of the most harmful situations in our world today is poverty, hunger, and disease. Mostly, poverty is seen in third-world countries, along with the struggles that come with it, i.e. poverty and disease. However, poverty is also seen on the streets of some major cities in first-world countries. This rate of poverty is not as fatal and astounding as those in some other places around the globe, but does make an impact nonetheless. All cases of poverty, especially the ones that lead to starvation and deadly diseases, should all be paid special attention to because we should try to prevent it from becoming the number one killer of a population today. This is also mainly due to the fact that so many people are losing their human rights and not much is being done about it. So, this has obviously become increasingly important in our world today.

  23. Part 2 of 2:
The third issue that is equally as important as the rest, but somehow falls as third on this list of priorities is overpopulation and overconsumption. Of course, this is affecting all of us and our world as we know it is steadily changing. Overpopulation in every nation leads to overconsumption of goods, foods, resources, etc. This is important for every global citizen, as we need to control and rationalize everything we do. These are obviously not the times for extravagant and useless spending, if we want to conserve resources and be conscientious about our responsibilities as global citizens.
The fourth issue is impending, yet just as monumental as the ones previously mentioned. This is the issue of climate change, or more specifically global warming and the greenhouse effect. Pretty soon, if scientists are accurate in the observations, there will be a gaping hole in the ozone layer due to our carelessness and disregard of our ecosystem and every living thing around us. If we start to pay more attention to external surroundings and the environment, we could slowly start to repair everything that has been damaged by the human race and our lack of responsibility to the environment. Maybe it is not the most important issue that is occurring right now, right this very second, but it is basically staring us right in the face, and we should know by now not to ignore warnings so big as the endangerment of polar bears, and the melting of the polar ice caps.
Last but not least, the fifth issue falls last on this list of priorities because I believe it is not as impending as the previous four. This one is the Female Awakening which has been occurring for the past years. This is the realization that male oppression can be present no longer and that women have equal rights which need to be recognized and acknowledged no matter what position they maintain. No longer is the world going to be dominated by all males, with the lesser roles being held by women. As females realize this, the world will slowly start to change its previously conceived notions about gender roles.
These are all issues occurring today in our global community which are all being addressed slowly but steadily. As global citizens, we are making the effort to change the world, one step at a time, each person making a difference, and every opinion and perspective counts.

  24. Numerous amounts of global issues are surrounding our everyday lives; however the main question is which do we consider as most prominent? Which do we decide should be implied to our students as most essential? Although nationalism may lead most educators to focus on issues which directly affect our country, we must also center our education on other topics which may appear as irrelevant to us now, yet will come as a charging tidal wave later on. We must also focus on issues that we know will be present by the time today’s students are thrown out in the “real world” and must then be the ones responsible for solving conflicts which many have tried and failed at. As time passes by, students remain ignorant in perspective to issues which will appear as impossible to mend once they reach the age where it will be their job to find solutions.

Everyone has heard of human rights, however not many know the responsibility which one is entitled once these rights are not being enforced. We as global citizens take these rights for granted, mainly because we think that they are being respected. However what many do not realize is the fact that these rights are not acknowledged by a great deal of nations around the world. To many there are no such things as human laws or responsibilities, and this is also one of the main reasons as to why there have been so many international conflicts and disagreements. This is also the reason why humans have and continue to abuse each other without limit. Worse of all this lack of human rights in some countries is very subtle. There is no place on earth where all human rights are fully enforced by the government, even though many do not realize this. Therefore that is why it is so difficult to fight this issue and the exact same reason why it must be solved. This affects all of us as global citizens, as we are all affected by each other due to our interconnecting relationships and dependence on one another.

Another of our greatest issues, occurring not far from home is overpopulation and overconsumption. The greatest danger of this issue is that it is affecting the entire world and in more than one form. Overpopulation, mainly in countries such as China and India is causing serious effects such as a low GDP per capita. This is directly connected with the poverty within the country and therefore also the disease. In many countries with overpopulation there are never enough health centers or educational centers, or even housing to satisfy the growing population. Yet this issue is so hard to fix because the population is so hard to lower, and if a country were to attempt to lower their population they would need money which they do not have. This is the moment when countries such as India or whole continents such as Africa would desperately need the help of more developed countries such as the USA. However these countries are too busy over consuming and filling themselves of useless objects which they do not need. Therefore the only effect of this is a greater inequality and gap between nations worldwide.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The third issue is one which does not affect countries differently and will finish have the greatest destructive effect once it reaches its peak. This issue is the climate change and the abuse which we are having on our ecosystem. As global citizens, we call ourselves the intelligent race; however what race in their right mind would destroy their habitat? All over the world we are slowly destroying the habitat which has provided us with life, and even though we know ways in which to slow down this destructive rate, we prefer to continue with our daily habits because it is easier than to take upon a change. A change however that would serve to protect our planet. Humans however refuse to see the damaging effects which their own actions are having upon themselves and the effects that they have created for their children and grandchildren if rapid action is not taken. This is one issue which the damages cannot be repaired, and the only thing that can be done is decreasing the amount of harm in hope for a not so catastrophic future.

Of course along with these large scale issues we must also focus on more personal issues and in this case the war in Afghanistan takes the spotlight. As citizens of not only the world, but also of the USA, we must realize that as a nation, inner conflicts must be solved before other large scale conflicts are taken into consideration. We cannot have a country which is not unified and free to center all its effort into a certain issue try to solve international conflicts. The war in Afghanistan has not been taken very seriously by citizens because they feel they are powerless towards it. However as a nation an action must be taken to stop or decrease the desiccation to a war which has caused animosity with other nations, a blow in the economy, and a great amount of deaths and separations in families which can never may never be mended.
The last issue which remains as a small time bomb which will eventually explode is nuclear proliferation, or the fact that countries are increasing the power of their arms as if preparing for war. Even though seemingly harmless, this race for arms has slowly begun to create tension amongst nations around the world. This competition has not only created tension but has also begun to create alliances. Sound familiar? If not, these small steps are all common in one large event. This event is the world war. At the start of all world wars there is a great amount of competition for power and greatest number of weapons, in this case, nuclear weapons. The U.S. has not left itself behind and has also begun to develop arms of mass destruction. Other countries however are not ready to be defeated and will not let their guard down. How long will it be before the subtle competition is over and those “hard feelings” are let loose?
It is up to us as global citizens to allow this question to never be answered.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree that putting Global education in schools is something that should be done so students know more about what is going on at this time around the world. The issues around the world are either getting resolved or are getting worse as more time passes. If we learn about these issues we can try to be able to do something even if it is little and even inform others about theses issues. The top five issues that you chose were very well selected. One that I think that was very well expressed and I do agree with is the climate change. I think that this issue is affecting everyone no matter where you are. Everyone does know what is happening and they want to do what is best but we think that is might be too late but, everyone still is doing what they can.
When looking at the different issues all of them are very important. They all need to be solved but I think these are the top of them. My first issue is human rights and human laws. We all know that a lot of the laws are always violated but nothing is done about this. The laws should be redone and be more specific when being written. Some of the laws seem to say one thing and then mean another and that doesn’t seem to b fair for many people. As well as you said I think another very important issue is the female awakening. The world was brought up to be about the men and how they were leaders about everything. The men did all the work and women did house work and had kids. But now many of that has changed for the best. Women would stand up for each other and showed the men they can do what they do as well. Even thou they did that many men still think that women cannot do everything men can. So men think of women from how they were taught from when growing. Still generation’s alive today think women should not do anything and the men should bring the money home. Today women are doing things to show this is wrong but, if we still have women who do not stand up for themselves and take it from the men we will not overcome this.
My third issue is the climate change. From the beginning we messed up doing things that was bad for our atmosphere. We were too late to change what was already damaged. Even thou right now we are trying our best to try to make things better and not worse. The problem is that not everyone cares about it and doesn’t do anything about this issue. As most of us know the water levels are rising and the world will soon go into a bad time but, we will have to try to fix things. The data is there and so is the proof so we all know that something has to be done soon. Another issue is the war in Afghanistan and in Iraq. Many families are having a hard time dealing with the deaths of many of their family members that are dying and getting hurt. At this people are still trying to figure out why this war is still going on, and why it does not end. Instead of taking people out now they are taking in more troops but is this going to help. I do not think this war is a necessity but we would need many people to boy cot this to see what will happen at the end. But I do not think this war should go on and I say this from experience because both of my step brothers have gone and it is not a good feeling worrying about them all the time.
My last issue is science, technology and society. How this all going to fit together is what we all want to know. Right now everything is growing so fast that what are wanting to do is make things better for the environment and better for us to use and that will go with the future. A lot of things can go wrong when trying to make things better but at the end they figure things out and try to make things like I said before better for the society and that’s what we want. These are my top five issues that I think are the most to be resolves at this moment even thou there are many still out there.

  27. The five topics that are mentioned in this post are without a doubt five really important issues that should be focused on in a global education class and even outside of the classroom and in the real world. But my top five key issues are a little different then the ones on this post.
The first issue of course is human rights. Human rights here in the United States are respected and all citizens have the right to believe in whatever they want and can say whatever htey want to say without being punished. But in foreign continents like South America or Africa Or Asia human rights arent as important. For example here in the United States all children have a right to a good education but in places like Africa, a very small amount of children are given the privilage to go and study and to be someone in life. Also, as i mentioned here in the US people can say anything they want and nothing happens and we have the right to our own religion, but for example in some cities in South America many people are put in prison for saying things or for their religious beliefs.
In my opinion, I believe that climate change and the ecosystem should be the next key issue. Think about it, if we dont put this issue as one of the most important there wont be a place to call home anymore because it will be dead. The climate change is extremly important and its necessary that it be one of the key issues that many global education leaders focus on and teach their students about.
Poverty would come next on my top five key issues. Poverty is really a serious issue that is happening all over the world. And face it, this global economy that we are facing isnt really making this issue that much easier to take care of and fix. Poverty creates many people to not have homes and die of hunger and disease and so forth. This is definitly a important issue that must be taken care of.
Overpopulation is something very serious that if its not taken care of now, it will be too much to handle. Overpopulation causes more houses to be built (hurting our ecosystem) more food needs to be produced, more schools, hospitals, and etc. Overpopulation also causes overconsumption meaning that all of our natural resources like gasoline and petrolium will come to an end at a very fast pace because more people everday are using a lot more of it.
My last key issue would have to be the female awakening. The reason this isnt one of the top 3 is because this issue has been dealt with and women have accomplished a lot and have alot more oppurtunities then before on so on. But even though this issue has been dealt with, students still have to learn about it because the female awakening is an imporatnt part of our past that must be taught to all generations and must be focused on in all schools around the world.
Human Rights, Climate Change/Ecosystem, Poverty, Overpopulation/Overconsumption, and The Female Awakening are my top five key issues that must be focused on the most.

  28. After reading this excerpt of “The Key Global Issues of Our Time”, I am in complete agreement that we must address the current global issues in the curriculum. If global issues are not present in the student’s curriculum then there is no point in teaching the student how to read and write in world that will soon cease to exist due to the atrocious problems of our world. There are infinite of issues in our world that need to be included in the current curriculums in the world from Terrorism to Poverty however, in my opinion there are five crucial global issues that deserve to be addressed in the more complex level required by the curriculum.
The first global issue that deserves mandatory attention in our curriculum is as stated in the excerpt, the ABSENCE OF RESPECT FOR BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS IN TODAY'S GLOBAL REALITY. This issue had been ongoing since the beginning of our race and we need to start finding solutions now before our disrespect for human rights marks the end of our existence. The Universal Declaration of human rights was the first initiative put forth to exterminate this issue but a follow up plan needs to be implemented. Once the students learn about the dimensions of this issue they will begin to acknowledge a possible solution for the issue. Weather it is our nationality, gender, or age we must learn to respect the basic rights we are born with.
The second global issue that should be implemented in our curriculum is OVERPOPULATION AND OVERCONSUMPTION. We have slowly forgotten the magnitude of this issue but that does not mean that overpopulation or overconsumption has stopped. We are the contemporary version of the Roman Empire in overconsumption and unless we start creating solutions beginning in our classrooms we will also have a similar ending like the Romans. Due to the great poverty of our world families become larger since children become the only source of happiness. As families grow our world continues to overpopulate and it will never stop if we don’t act now. The social environment teaches us that in order to be happier we must buy more and it will only take a great force for humans to realize they are wrong.
The third Global issue is POVERTY, HUNGER AND DISEASE as also stated in the excerpt. It is very easy for a human to ignore the hurt of others when you don’t experience it every day. However we must not take our chance thus, we must battle the dark side of human nature and begin to continuously care of our neighbors. This way we can terminate this issue with the equivalent force it inhibits our world.
Our fourth global issue is SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY. Our world rarely takes into account the unintended results of technology which is continuously creating problems. Science develops the technology and society determines the priorities of this technology. Society must also learn to be responsible for the results of these technologies that are meant to aid the human world. By presenting this issue in the educational curriculum students will become more aware of what their duties with technology are.
Lastly, the fifth global issue should be The WAGING WAR ON THE ECOSYSTEM. This would not only include climate change but also the geographical catastrophes that are occurring in our world. We now have the power to destroy our world and we must fight to remain alive. Things are getting worse faster than we predicted so we must reverse what we created and protect our planet from our own destruction.

  29. To start with, I have to agree that Human Rights has to be very important because the Human Rights were established on December 10, 1948 and those people had to go through a lot to be able to help humans in later years be equally treated and have many rights that everything will be fair for everybody. But sadly, there are not respected all the time how we would like them to be. This should be enjoyed rather than worried about. Since they are being violated each and every day this should be taught in a global education program so they can learn about them and understand that we are all created equal and that is how it should always be.
The Female Awakening is a very important part for woman’s life, because there have been woman like Molly Pitcher that fought in the American Revolutionary war and carried water to men on the battlefield, shows that woman do have the right to fight in war. Also, Harriet Tubman which was an African American humanitarian and abolitionist. For us woman this is really important because we get to learn how our freedom and the rights we have today got to evolve and learn about heroines that changed the way people looked at women. From this we can also learn about when women were able to vote and had the right to go out and work instead of staying at home and being a housewife.
In Haiti, there is malnutrition which people are dying of all the time. This started by the effects that happened after the colonist, obviously if you do not have money you can’t buy food and people get sick .The woman who are pregnant cannot feed themselves, get sick and the baby is born in bad conditions and they cannot take him to the doctor because the parents don’t have money and many other similar stories with other countries. This is a very important issue because everybody should be aware that not every one in every country are lucky enough to have everything they wish for and the fact that many people are dying from this issue in such poor countries. By learning about this we can learn about the story of why and that can let us help these people to get out of those situations. Believe it or not the United States has the power to help those in Africa, Haiti and many of those poor countries in the world, or you can be just an individual that wants to get people to help.
Global Warning is one of the most important issues going on everywhere, stores like Walt Mart, Publix, Ikea all have bags that are made of a hard material that lets you put in all your groceries in and you wont have to get the paper bags and keep polluting the world. If we were not being taught about the climate change nobody would care and nobody would be aware of why there is cold when its never cold or why the glaciers are melting. This should be taught because it is not something that is only affecting the United States but it’s affecting the whole world and the whole world needs to do something about it because you cannot only fix one part of the problem.
In the other hand, the fifth issue is not that important for a global class because not all the countries mentioned used it so it is not something that is being used globally, plus there is a Nucleur Non-Proliferation Treaty which is to stop the spread, so at least there is something being done about this not like the other issue such as Human Rights that most of them are not being followed and yet nothing is done. I will have to say that because education is sometimes not taken seriously around the world especially with the people that do not have the money or transportation like in Africa. Education is one of the most important decisions in anyone’s life because its what decides what you are going to be in life and if you are going to be successful or not. This is with what I agree and due to the fact that Nuclear Proliferation is not as important to me makes me think that Education is the best decision anybody can make.

  30. I definitely agree that the issues presented in the blog are extremely important and need to be dealt with as soon as possible. However, I believe there are more severe issues at hand that can replace a few of the ones chosen. The female awakening is one of the most severe issues in this day and age. It is most definitely true that the male domination in society is over. This issue is barely addressed throughout society and needs to be paid attention to. Females are climbing numerous ladders towards success. This means that whoever is leading needs to acknowledge the situation at hand whether it is male or female. Everyone is being affected by the female awakening directly or indirectly. Another issue that is crucial in the world is hunger, poverty, and disease. Poverty leads to hunger and disease. Millions are without food and shelter. This issue needs to be dealt with. Many die each year because they lack what they need to survive. Poverty is a major epidemic. Poverty, hunger, and disease is an issue that has to be on the top five most important issues. Climate change is also among the issues I agree should be in the top five issues. Climate change is mostly due to human interaction with nature. Climate change is a major issue that could have been avoided a long time ago but wasn’t paid attention to. This issue truly affects the whole world. Nuclear Proliferation is indeed a monumental issue but I would replace it with overpopulation. Overpopulation is becoming more of a critical topic as time goes by. Each year the planet is inhabited by millions more. The planet is soon going to reach its carrying capacity and we won’t be able to control the outcome. We can handle it right now if we try to control it. Overpopulation leads to overconsumption. Because of overconsumption, we are rapidly running out of resources. The last issue I want to present is Human Rights. Human rights are constantly being ignored as an issue when in reality it is monumentally important. These issues are the ones I believe need to be dealt with as soon as possible. I feel these are of more importance.

  31. The issues stated in this blog, I do believe are the top five out of the numerous global issues which as humans, we analyze. However I do not agree with the order of importance in which they are listed. I believe they should be as follows:

    1. Human Rights
    2. Poverty, Hunger and Disease
    3. Climate Change
    4. Female Awakening
    5. Nuclear Proliferation

To begin with the most important global issue is Human Rights. Human Rights is an issue that has been around throughout history, and although there are some acts of violence, genocides, and discrimination still going on. The issue on Human Rights has improved immensely we now have a plethora more of human rights as well as the fact that racism and discrimination has decreased and almost been eliminated.
The second most important issue is poverty, hunger, and disease. This issue is extremely important, and it is a horror to allow so many to die, due to the fact that they don’t have enough food to eat. Most of the world eats excessively, while these people would feel lucky to find one good meal a week. Poverty leads to Hunger which leads to disease. Because of poverty these people which are less fortunate, eat and drink unhealthy water and foods, this causes them to get diseases and have malnutrition, and because they don’t have money to buy food or antibiotics they are forced to live with these circumstances.
The third most important global issue is Climate change, this is an issue which is worsening rapidly due to global warming. Global warming affects things such as the shrinkage of the arctic caps. Not only are the polar arctic caps shrinking they are thinning as well. Under these Arctic caps there is nothing but ocean so animals such as the polar bears have an extremely difficult time finding food and they have no surface to live in. Global Warming is caused by humans in reality, because we use electricity which burns fossil fuels which cause air pollution. We also over use electricity as well as water for example: people usually leave the light on when they leave a room, They leave the water running while they brush their teeth, they take our long showers, and watch way too much television. If we were to decrease all these bad habits we would see a difference in the global warming/climate change.
The fourth most important global issue is the female Awakening, throughout history women have become more powerful human beings. We women now have the freedom of voting, working, going to school, making our own decisions, driving a car, women have progressed gracefully and powerfully. This is not an issue which directly affects humans. However it was an issue at one point, and although females are not fully where they could and will be it doesn’t mean its not an important global issue.
My final and fifth issue is nuclear proliferation, nuclear proliferation is a dangerous issue which can kill people much quicker than any other issue in this list. Nuclear proliferation is the use of nuclear weapons which are used as competition. Nuclear weapons can and will cause terrible damage which will never be fixed, at least not if its killing humans.
These are my top five global issues, the ones which I consider to be terrible important whether it is because they need to be improved or have gone through an amazing improvement.

  32. Out of all the issues mentioned in the list, I awarded the violation of human rights as the most important and troublesome issue present in mankind right now. Most of the issues harming our society today are manmade. Since man realized that his power could be used to conquer over lands and people, history has been overwhelmed with atrocities such as wars, tortures, mass rapes, discrimination, etc. All of the issues in the last you presented to us are a result of mankind’s negligence and merciless actions. In other words, the violation of human rights wraps everything up into one main issue which is far from being solved. If the world will be able to follow all the articles stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights then none of what was listed below would have taken place.
Evolving as one branch from the issue tree; hunger, poverty and disease is the second problem taken into account. It has been considered ridiculous for rich people to have money to waste while poor people starve to death. Annually, millions of people starve to death due to the lack of food and nutrients in their bodies. If every single person in the US could donate one dollar to combat hunger, we would have collected over 300 million dollars in order to supply food to the needed people and nobody could ever starve to death. Rich people can obviously donate more than a dollar and not all of them donate a single penny.
Overpopulation and overconsumption are the next problem in our black list that is affecting us right now. This issue branches out from hunger, poverty and disease into a new one, caused by the previous issue presented. The increasing population and the exaggerated consumption of mankind have become dangerous when it comes to accomplishing a sustainable life on Earth. If we disregard this now, then our future generations will be forced to look for new energy sources or new planets.
The harming of our ecosystem is a topic that must be utterly taken into account. If we destroy plant and animal species by damaging the environment, the food chain and other natural processes will be altered and we will face a total extermination of the human race. This includes polluting our water sources and air which will cause death, genetic mutations and new diseases.
The last issue that global citizens must be aware of is the female awakening. During the 20th century, the female population in the world has rebelled against discrimination, sexism and unfair actions promoted and done against women. A couple of years ago, women were not allowed to study the same careers of men, they did not have the right to speak or represent their families, they did not possess the freedom of speech they deserved, etc. Our female population criticized these actions and made a turn in our society and they have been able to gain their power and independence from males.

  33. To begin with, I would have to say that having a global education class, there has to be global news and/or global awareness involved in the students. The students will have to learn what is going around in their world that they will be exposed to in the near future, and can start now with receiving information about it now. Adding global news to a class such as biology or Earth science is something that happens a lot with out us noticing it but there are also classes that focus on just global news, Global Perspectives. This class allows students to express what they think and feel about the specific topic and therefore the students get to hear and know what other students think or feel about that global issue.
I would have to agree with all the five top global issues that you have listed on your blog. These five topics would be absence of respect for basic human rights in today’s global reality, the female awakening, poverty, hunger and disease, climate change, and nuclear proliferation. These same five issues are on the top of my list. First of all, the absence of respect for basic human rights is a constant issue all around the world even up to this day. There are people all around the world that don’t notice or know their own rights and there are people that take of advantage of that and treat these people disrespectfully and don’t care about what they are doing. There are also people that know their rights but then their rights get violated and they don’t know what to do. This just says that there are people in this world that don’t know human rights and what that consists of.
In addition, the female awakening is another important global issue. Women all around the world are starting to rise up and take action. Women are noticing that they have been oppressed in the past and are taking action of stopping that. They are getting more jobs, maybe jobs that men have and women weren’t allowed to work in but now are noticing that they can do that same jobs as men can. Poverty, hunger and disease is another big issue all around the world. There are people every day that wake up on the street or in a house that is in a bad condition to live in and don’t have food or clothing. There are people that live in extreme poverty and people out of that country don’t even know what they are living through. With allowing and teaching students this global issue that faces a lot of people all around the world, students can get an idea and know what is going on in their world and around them.
Climate change is something that is always on everyone’s mind, all the time. We think about how much this and that can affect global warming and are thinking about ways to help the earth. We are constantly thinking about the weather and how gases such as ones from cars, are affecting the atmosphere. Finally, nuclear proliferation is something that is happening now. We are building more nuclear weapons and so other countries are responding by building theirs. This is a constant battle and now is in a lot of people’s minds. So as you can see I do agree with you five global issues affecting us now and don’t have anything to say about any other issues that top those five you have chosen.

  34. The most crucial issue in the world is the abuse of human rights. Through out history, the human race has mistreated its own people and has forgotten the importance of human rights. People are not realizing that they need to respect the rights of people and seems like the human life has been devalued. Wars, genocides, violence, crime, discrimination, and etc. People deserve to receive their basic rights.
Another important global issue is poverty, hunger and disease which comes ranking 2 in my opinion. As they say the poorer get poorer while the richer get richer. Billionaires are buying more and more luxuries and not thinking of those that need the money just to buy simple supplies for any everyday use like food. People are not realizing the excessive money they are wasting for no reason when they can simply donate this money to other poor countries and too poor families in not very developed countries. Money should also be donated to those with diseases and too stop the spread and so many deaths.
I would consider the next basic problem to be Overpopulation and over consumption. As the population grows their will be even more over consuming and our earths resources would decrease by the years. We are approaching the earths carrying capacity we need to find alternatives and search options to help this issue out. Overpopulation and over consumption tied together as goes hand by hand and both should be taken into consideration. This then leads to self destruction.
Self destruction seems to be another fatal issue in our global issues. Humans keep destructing the environment. We are constantly abusing the ecosystem and our green planet. Climate change, extinct species are showing us that our earth is being affect a lot. People are not realizing they are harming them selves by harming the environment because we are living in this harmful and dirty conditions that can result in sickness and death. Even this is not good enough for people to take action.
Finally, the last prominent topic is the female awakening. Women has been forced to suffer under the society and has been mistreated by men. Now a days we are seeing a dramatic turn in the events. women now know that they deserve to be treated equally and are fighting their rights. They are now claiming a higher position in society and are demanding that their rights as human beings are respected just as men’s.

  35. The topic of the day is very simple in the importance level. It is a chain, a domino affect, of how one thing leads to another.
Over population and over consumption starts everything off. The world population is grows quickly like wild fire and while our resources are also disappearing, the environment suffers.
Over population creates another issue. Since this world revolves around money, it would not be hard to notice. Poverty becomes a big matter of this whole thing, the poor becomes poorer and disease runs ramped as it revolves around the world.
Poverty has become a big impact on our world these days; we need to recognize the cause and effect of this challenge that has bestowed upon us. Poverty and disease start to grow into this problem, as money becomes an issue.
In following this, I believe that this financial problem has become something that has changed all our lives. This is not an easy issue to deal with either way, and should be mentioned in some way and talked about in a regular basis.

  36. Among the issues discussed in the blog they all involve global significance that is crucial in any nation of the world. The global issues chosen are important in our time and should be addressed and adjusted constantly. Although the choices discussed are significant I would have minor altercations in my selection of the top five most important global issues of this time period.
    1. Poverty, hunger, and disease:
This issue was mentioned in the blog and I believe that it should be considered the most crucial of all the global issues being addressed now. This issue is the foundation of human destruction as people living in poverty suffer countless problems regarding their well being such as illness and starvation. It is important to clarify that poverty is of the most important global issue because there is an enormous number of people worldwide living in poverty right now not just in one nation but in most nations. It is an issue that cannot be taken for granted and must be advised and cared for or people will continue to suffer worldwide if the solution is not made.
    2. Human Rights:
This issue, addressed in the blog as well, is my number two issue of importance in the world. People around the world must respect and honor each other and even though a system has been underlined in the Universal Declaration for Human Rights people continue to disregard the respect that they’re fellow man should receive and completely disregard human integrity. People should honor and treat each other equally with respect in order to truly function as a whole. Without the complete functional foundation of a human cooperating system the world will be in a constant state of flux. Humans must acknowledge the rights that they have and disregard their selfish indifferences. Other people deserve the rights that they themselves receive and it is up to them to acknowledge the true importance of human rights. This global issue must reawaken in our nations in order to truly thrive globally so people can cease to treat others so irrationally and begin to demand equal opportunities, equal demands, and common grounds.
    3. Climate Change:
This issue was also stated in the blog in the top five and is ranked number three in my top five global issues. The issue of global warming is no longer a myth but an unfortunate reality raising havoc across the nations. As little as twenty years ago this was merely an impossibility, even science fiction. However, thanks to the uncunning ability to willingly relinquish ourselves of our Earth's resources without taking account about the harming x factor that results we as a species have dug ourselves deep into a hole that is very difficult to climb out of. This global issue is of critical importance as it rages the possibility that our future will suffer because of the actions of now. The issue must unite globally and be settled from here on out because as long as we are at war with the ecosystem it will ultimately be our downfall.

    ReplyDelete
  37. 4. The Quest for Infinite Energy:
This issue was not discussed in the top five of the blog. However it does regard some critical importance that as a whole the world must account for if we are to survive and thrive as an existing species. At this moment, we are fueling our way to Hades thanks to constant use of our Earth's fossil fuels. We use it because it is the only relevant form of energy we can easily grasp and use. However, if the human race can unite and work together then perhaps we can discover a much greater form of energy with no harmful effect. Fossil fuels are what is sending the Earth to hell because of its harmful aftermath. With the invention of an infinite energy source this will not only diminish the harming battle against our ecosystem but allow us to obtain an energy resource that we can use efficiently and replenish it without any concerns of it depleting. The world must come to the understanding that time is running out and we are running out of fossil fuels and it is up to us to use our minds and unite them to the start of something new, infinite energy.
    5. Science, Technology, and Society:
This is the last issue of my top five and is not considered in the top five posted in the blog. I believe this global issue is of serious importance as it rekindles the gateway to the future. Nations across the world have adapted to the use of technology and we as a species have advanced and grown from that and now that we have reached the pinnacle of scientific excellence we have nowhere to go but up. Thanks to the cunning fascinations of science the world is no longer what it used to be 50 years ago. There have been countless discoveries that have not only revolutionized the world but have become accomodated to daily household use. Without the discovery of such technologies as the internet, television, even cellular phones where would the world be at this point if these items were not to your grasp every second of the day. These discoveries are now becoming necessities in the real world that we live in now. What does a man do when he must contact with some 3000 miles away for business immediately? He simply picks up his smart phone and contacts him from any local spot. These things could never have been thought possible in the past and now in the last 30 to 50 years so much as been accomplished in so little the time. What does the future have in store for us? If we did not have computers and cell phones 40 years ago what will be in our possession forty years from now? The possibilities are endless which is why the world must focus on technological development if this new era that we have peeked into will continue to advance and thrive. Like it was mentioned before we have nowhere else to go now but up.

  38. According to the article the key global issues of our time are, the absence of Respect for Basic Human rights, Female Awakening, male domination, Poverty hunger and disease, climate change, nuclear proliferation. Due to the libery of having a course such as Global Perspective we are able to explore such important chapters in our daily life.
without successfully solving or even remotly understanding such issues peace like mentioned above cannot be achieved then world conflict cannot be resolved. A way to fix this would be to teach students at a early stage to be understanding and accept such issues to be able to resolve conflict and be effective leaders of tommorow.

  39. Global issues have been around since the beginning of earth and the global issues keep on changing but it takes about a long time to solve one much more to solve another issues. In people opinion their different top 5 issues but I believe all issues are equally important but for this post we have to name the top 5 so here we go.
    5. Poverty and Hunger
Millions of kids die in one country called Africa because of malnutrition and hunger. That’s millions of kids that die in one year and that’s not including the rest of the world. We have parts of the world that are living in poor living conditions like for example India and most of the South America countries. Poverty and Hunger connects to other problems like over population and lack of health care. Since countries have a less than stellar economy they can’t afford to provide people with everyday necessity like food, water, shelter, and protection. Countries with poverty have the problems with security they have the highest crime rate meaning more corruption. Thanks to his little issue “I’m being sarcastic” us big economic countries have to put with immigration from these poor functioning countries. Meaning we have a bunch of people doing odd jobs getting away from not paying taxes and they most likely are getting free health care so everybody life is being affected from this problem.
    4. Health Care
Everybody deservers to have health care not for free as the Obama administration is planning but for a low fee should be the way it works. I believe that Health Care is a issue that affects everybody because 1 out of 10 people don’t have health care because this global recession people can’t afford the cost of health insurance. The problem with health care is this really does affect everybody but in different ways. In poorer nations a health reform is going to cost billions of dollars in creating hospitals, hiring nurses and doctors, and buying medicines and those billions of dollars were really not sure if those countries can afford that type of reform while the world powers are in situation of their own. Great powers like the western Europeans nation have a huge problem because of international health care. The problem is that since everybody has healthcare hospitals have long lines of people waiting to go see a doctor and imagine if you need a major heart surgery but you have to wait two months since all the hospitals are packed with people. Now America doing the same mistake, I see the only way to solve this problem is by lowering prices of insurance so with the extra money we have we can build new hospitals and so the hospitals don’t get so crowded.
    3. Global Warming
We always have to get ready to make a better tomorrow and the problem with that his that is tomorrow is beginning to darken because of global warming. Higher temperature creates weird weather and starts melting the polar ice caps and sea level start rise. The reason this number 3 because this won’t really affect us not till 20 years which don’t get me wrong this problem should on the back of everybody head but these other two problem should be ahead.
    2. Nuclear Proliferation
Somewhere in the world somebody has the ability to press a button and destroy the world that we all love care for. This is the reason why global warming is behind this issue because global warming takes a long time to affect us but nuclear war can wipe out the planet in the manner of minutes that’s why.

  40. Part 2 of 2

    1. Economy Crisis
The world revolves around money and the only way to solve any issues you need some amount money. When the stock markets crash all issues on task was stop. To solve global warming you need money to solve it because how else were you supposed to provide materials and projects needed to solve this issue without money. Health care a very costly issue because you have to use about more than billions of dollars to this issue. Poverty is the issue of being poor how you solve this issue by having money. Nuclear Proliferation you have to use millions of dollars to stop the people from pressing that button. The economy has affected everybody to some degree some people have lose jobs, some people have to change their lifestyle, and some people have became poor because of this issue. About ten percent of people in America have no jobs. This crisis was the main issue in the election 2008. Where candidates had to describe their strategies on how they are planning to solve this issue. The two ways people plan on solving this issue where completely different. The trickle down affect and the give the money to the people. The trickle down affect I believe works for more economically developed countries because you are creating more jobs for people and you are stimulating the economy by creating jobs and providing people with money while the give the money to the people affect works for lower economic countries because those people are provided with money that they can use to spend on life necessities so there curing the economy for the bottom up.
    The Round Up
So here my top five I don’t really agree with choosing a top five but I believe the only problem we should all worry about because the only way can really solve any other issue is that we need to solve this economic crisis. So we can have the proper funds to use on these other problems.

  41. Pt.1

While your suggested methods are certainly comprehensive paths for the integration of a global studies curriculum, I find that discussing the topics in the Global Studies/Perspectives class as separate entities without acknowledging their correlation or their possible solutions is too narrow a view for the broad-mindedness necessary of a global leader. Discussing them in that manner just pushes these vivid issues into the same corner as a dull math class, to be dismissed as just another fact. Their connectivity must be stressed, their repercussions emphasized and the possibility of their solution, at the very least, presented.

I agree with all of the issues you proposed except nuclear proliferation. Not because I consider it less important but because in the context of what a teenage global leader can do, it is a moot and narrow discussion-- much like the Middle East quagmire. They both rely on humans ending their stubbornness and magically coming to a peaceful settlement which, regardless of thousands of promise treaties signed, won't happen. The most we can hope for at this time is a gradual reduction of weapons. Perhaps a supranational organization with a strong enforcement policy could sort this issue out in the future but as of now, there is still too much hesitation about what a supranational organization entails for it to be formed. If you are going to discuss 5 essential global issues in the format you present here, I think Nuclear Proliferation is a comparative waste because it is such a catch-22. I would replace it with the impact of technology on society (intended and unintended outcomes) because it is an essential part of the global atmosphere right now and overlaps with all issues.

The two of the four you mentioned are large umbrella issues (the exceptions being the Female Awakening which is a subset of Human Rights and Nuclear Proliferation being a subset of Political Conflicts) and I think that offers the opportunity to present their connectivity to other issues instead of just discussing each topic in an abstract, general depth because of time constraints and the sheer quantity of other, equally important issues.

I propose dividing the year into four parts: Introduction, Human Rights, Climate Change, and Political Conflicts. In the Introduction, the teacher would introduce the curriculum, a long list of global issues, and certain things they think their students should keep in mind when discussing the those issues (such as Hanvey's requirements and the barriers to rational thinking). The global educator would brief students on the fundamentals of each subject at the beginning of each topic and then ask their students to connect the issue with other issues and discuss the solutions in the context of those and other connections. Each student (or group) would present a short (5-15 minute) summary of their findings each time. For example, connecting Human Rights to the Female Awakening or to Poverty and Hunger (which could then be connected to International Aid etc) or to something as seemingly far-fetched as Terrorism. In the end of each division, I suggest making a visual web of all the connections students were able to find. From there, perhaps they could create a plan of what combination of key subset issues could be made to resolve the umbrella issue right down to the execution of the propositions (just creating a supranational organization will not ensure that the issue is resolved in real life, regardless of what treaties may say). Maybe once done with all of the 3 topic divisions, they could recreate the web and combination exercises of all three.

Admittedly, the suggestion above requires above average reasoning skills but I believe that, with gentle guidance and encouragement, a whole class could come together to solve the puzzle. If accomplished, the students would leave with a DEEP understanding of global issues and an unique insight on how to solve them.

  42. Pt. 2

P.S. I realize that I have deviated from your request of my top five issues, but, as I discussed in the first paragraph, just deciding on a certain set of issues is too simplistic and disjointed for something that requires a holistic understanding. If anything, I narrowed the five down to the essential three that I believe cover all of the areas of study in your syllabus.

  43. The problems and issues of the world seem to be adding on and on. In addition to all the ones that you have stated, there are the wars, economy, and the future problems regarding artificial intelligence. The top three most important global issues that I believe the world should be assisting to be are:
    -Poverty, hunger, and disease
    -Human rights
    -Climate change
    -Overpopulation and Over-consumption
    -Female Awakening
I believe that poverty, hunger and disease should be our number one global issue and should be the world’s top priority. Many people do not know about the extremely impoverished, so they do not have the real-life experience to walk in their shoes. Living in such poor conditions, it makes for the people living in those areas to eat poorly and living in unhygienic situation. These living conditions cause many deaths throughout the year. If there was no poverty, every single person would have the same opportunities that everyone has.
After poverty, I believe human rights is another top issue we should put in our world’s priority list. The rights of humans, any types of humans, should not be disregarded. I agree that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is one of the best documents to follow to make sure every single human has equality like every other human. Humans would also need to follow these rights. Not one person should be stripped of their human rights.
The third issue that I believe should be prioritized is the world’s climate change. I believe this one is significantly important because it is one that any single person can contribute to rather than a nation’s government. Although all these issues are up to us as humans, anyone can truly help. Every person can contribute to the solution of the issue by recycling and not polluting. Global warming can certainly be solved if there wasn’t as much pollution humans are giving into our planet. That cut in our ozone can be band-aided until it heals.
I chose overpopulation and over consumption as the number four global issue. This is truly a problem in the world. The world is estimated to reach double its population by the year 2050. With resources already becoming scarce, it would be difficult to reserve these resources. We need to learn to conserve our resources in order to have them in our future. The number of people’s demands is exceeding the carrying capacity and will continue to do so if no one is putting forth the effort to conserve resources.
The last issue that I believe should be in the world’s top priority list is the Female Awakening. This issue can cause a major change on our global status if it is resolved. Allowing women to be viewed as equal to men will make our world run at 100% rather than 50%. This would make the planet run on our full capacity. After all, two heads are better than one.

  44. As I was analyzing the options that were posted as the top five major global issues in this world, I was convinced. The absence of respect for basic human rights in today's global reality, female awakening, poverty, climate change and nuclear proliferatrion are indeed the most important global issues in my opinion, and in the author's. Respect for human right's is not influenced in a child as much as it was in the past; that respect has been declined because of the parents or because as they grow, they go through experiences that they feel because someone hurt them, that everyone will hurt them equally. Therefore, life becomes harder than what it was for them and they grow a cold heart. It may not occur to everyone; some people may forget about it but others may take it personal and want revenge for what was done to them. Female awakening is as important because it affects women and women have not been as respected or acknowledged as they should in society. This is indeed the generation of the female's awakening. Poverty, hunger, and disease is of great affect as well because it not only affects one part or one country but many countries especially in the midst of depression when there is no money available, or enough, for all the countries and enough doctor's or food to give. Climate change and nuclear proliferation work together because they have to do with the environment. The environment is in great danger as we continue to pollute with the factories, cars, and other manufacturing items that we create as we become more advanced in the human nature. As humanity, we need to take into consideration all of these issues and many more that are around the world.

  45. I completely agree that in order to fully grasp the concept of global education we must also be aware of the key issues that make the global community the way it is today. In this blog, the topics pinpointed were the female awakening, the ecosystem, poverty, nuclear proliferation and nationalism. However, I believe that these are not the most important topics to discuss. Others are of greater importance and must be recognized first.
The first issue would be human rights. This seems to be the greatest overall issue in the global community that is the roots from which most other problems derive. People around the world are deprived of their basic human rights. They are discriminated against in almost every way, shape, or form, whether it is because they are black, women, Muslim, Jewish, Christian, or anything else that has been present in the past centuries and they do not even know that this is part of human individualism. In some countries around the world, people do not get the basic means of survival, which are food, shelter, water, and a sustainable habitat. No one deserves to die from survival because their government did not provide them with sufficient necessities.
The second issue would be the ecosystem. The Earth is a fragile place that cannot be tolled with. There are no passengers on the spaceship Earth. We are all crew and because of this we must all work together to maintain it running properly. We are on the verge of total global warming. There is a theory that after a period of global warming comes a drastic climate change. We really cannot afford to be careless because the line between living one hundred plus years and the end of the world as we know it keeps getting slimmer through the years.
The third issue would be over consumption and overpopulation. The world population is increasing by the billions every decade. The resources available to us for survival are decreasing. The overpopulation of the world have driven people towards over consumption because we have reached our peak. There is enough resources to feed our planet but because the population keeps growing the resources are being over consumed to a point where our natural resources are being targeted and it is going to come a time where the nonrenewable resources will no longer be available.
The fourth issue would be poverty. All over the world people are struggling to put food in the table for their families. People are either losing their jobs or prevented from getting one. The current recession seems to be unending. Our economy is suffering greatly and affecting countries all over the world. In some places, the government does not supply its people with the means of supporting their families. Other people are losing their homes because they can no longer afford to sustain them.
The last issue is the female awakening. Nowadays, females are respected more than they were fifty plus years ago. Feminism advocates social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men. Feminists are feminine people that believe the rights of women should be equal to those of men. If the greater majority of the world become aware and supportive of feminism and the rights of women, then women in the future will have the opportunity to do a greater good, like men (for example, become president or solve a world affair). Being aware of all these issues puts us in a place of well-roundedness. In order to fully understand and be taught about global perspectives, one must first understand and take in and these issues.

  46. To this day many problems and issues exist throughout our planet. Different people have different opinions on which are the most important issues that we must concentrate on before any other. In my opinion the top five global issues that are accruing in our planet are overpopulation, poverty, the ecosystem, human right, and the search for infinite energy. These five global issues are very much related. I believe that the most important issues are those that have to deal with the health of our planet, and the health of our world economy. If we don’t take care of our planet nothing else on Earth is going to be of any importance because there’s not going to be any Earth to begin with. For these very reason is why I believe the issues we face with our ecosystem is one of the most important. We are disrupting the Earths natural rhythm by pollution and deforestation. The issue for the quest to find infinite energy is also in my opinion one of the most important because it will guarantee that our Earth stays healthy by keeping it free of pollutants. Overpopulation ties in with these issues because due to the large number of human population we are depriving the Earth of all its resources, almost killing it little by little. Solving the issues of our global economy will allow for all these changes to take place, making this issue of great importance.

  47. From all the issues mentioned in the top 5 list, I think the most important one right now, or at least the one we should be aware of is the financial global crisis. Due to the economic depression that the United States of America, the rest of the world is suffering the consequences. The rest of the issues have always been present and are utterly important but it seems like a quagmire, in other words a war that never ends. Human Rights violation has caused most of the issues found right now. I find it totally useless to remind people that this problem is there since every single citizen in this world acknowledges what is happening.
On the other hand, global economic crisis has been present for years now but a spontaneous global crisis is taking place due to the inflation in the most powerful nation of the world. The salaries of the workers around the world is lowering, people are losing their jobs, thus increasing the unemployment rate to an insane 10%.
We should be aware of this and do the best to keep our own economy safe, including both nationally and internationally. The other issues found on the list are very important and all of the global citizens should be concerned about this. For example, climate change is a remarkable conflict but it is not harming us at the moment as much as the one debated previously.

  48. There is no uncertainty of the requirement that pertains to the importance of implementing global issues in an educational curriculum. However, those who recognize this necessity, have different views and opinions towards what information and the way in which this information is provided. Some believe that it would be of great benefit to the educational system if we merge, or better said hint the impact of global issues that have a relationship with the subject of the class. For example, the subject of deforestation can be mentioned in a science class. However, doing so will not get the message across concerning the reality of the matter. The fuse will only give way of an opportunity to mention the topic but simply with time, also allow it to fade with other topics of the class such as photosynthesis. The students in the end will only be aware of what is going on, but not intentionally motivated to take action against it.

For that reason, it is greatly recommended to have a separate class in a global education program that can give a gateway to the analysis of these global issues. For instance, Human rights are one of the most impacting rights of all society. It is the way in which we all connect and can see in a profound aspect of how equal and same we are to one other. On the other hand, lately it can be observed all around the world of how these rights once impacted us but now seize to fade in meaning. Many around the globe have realized in their inner pride and choose to think of none other than themselves when taking critical decisions that can affect the rest. For example, there is a right to not be forced work beyond a certain number of hours. This is significantly violated through out the earth.

It can also be agreed that the Female Awakening, is perhaps, the greatest social revolution in our whole human history. This topic should also be introduced in a classroom due to the simple fact that not only is there males in the world, but again, females. Although these females may not be as strong in a physical sense as the men around our hemispheres, women in general have the wit and the high motivated will power that most men seem to lack. This intelligence can be used to make a difference in this world, and bring the sense of equality in the minds of all men who think they are better than women. We are all equal. Women should be as well.

Other issues that should be mentioned and discussed are the issues of Poverty and Hunger. As it can be seen through out the years, Poverty and Hunger have never seemed to reach to such high levels destructive slaughtering of the innocent human lives being wasted due to the lack of carelessness of those distributing the rations and money through out the world. This issue can be engraving the importance of this issue in the young minds of today, which will be the leaders of tomorrow. In addition, Nuclear Proliferation seems to as well rank at one of the top five issues around the world. Every country is in a private race/competition to gain the most power (Power above any other country). Consequently, they believe that arming up weapon wise can bring the safety to their country. What they seem to not comprehend, is the fact that once u have engaged in the manufacturing of weapons your country starts to influence the rest to do the same and motivate your country and the rest to improve the capability of destruction. As a result, these countries are endangering themselves and the rest of mankind with just a push of a single button that could end the human race as we know it.

In all, all these issues are of great importance. They should be considered to be introduced to not only global classes but to other classes as well. These issues need to not only recognized but displayed in such a way that the rest will be motivated to take action against them. It is always important to remember that it is not only the information being taught. It is the way in which it is taught that will result in what is to come next.

  49. I agree with your choosing of human rights as a core issue because even if we solve all the problems that affect the globe, if a person can enslave another human, carelessly kill them, limit their thinking by restricting knowledge and other things then any advancement is futile. However I disagree with you choosing the female awakening as an issue, if you could even call it an issue. Females are getting the rights and respect they should have gotten from the start. I fail to see how this is a grave injustice. If anything it is more of a human rights issue and unless females no longer consider themselves human then there might exist a psychological issue. Poverty, hunger, and disease is a issue I agree with because it is at the root of many problems that exists around the world. Also, because it is an widespread problem that continues to grow as more people are born into it. Climate change is also a issue that should be discussed thoroughly because it can lead to massive property damage and the costs of human lives. Nuclear proliferation is another issue that I find agreeable because no one should have access to weapons that are capable of destroying the lives of many and leaving land barren for years. Furthermore, no one should live in the constant fear that their lives could come to an end with the push of a button.
If I had the option of choosing five issues it would be the four that I have find agreeable beforehand and overpopulation. Overpopulation makes each and every problem worse because it affects more people and adds the actions the extra people to the problems. Not to mention the social issues that could arise like the one child policy in China where families would kill their daughter for want of a son.

  50. (Part One)
It is a sad reality that while the larger part of the population of the planet goes on living their daily lives, so many problems and conflicts are occurring all over the globe without much notice. Although it is true that the number of situations seem infinite, many of them are more significant than others. This is because some may affect us sooner than we think, or are affecting people living in poverty as we speak. That may just the main reason to why I agree that it is so significantly important to implement a global curriculum which addresses and teaches students all over of the global issues we face with everyday. Without courses such as “Global Perspectives”, the lack of knowledge towards worldly issues may result in passing the point of no turning back. Although I do agree with the fact that all of the top five issues mentioned above are indeed the most critical at this time, I do not necessarily believe that they all go in that specific order.
Basic human rights are an attachment to any person’s life; from his first days in a womb, until he takes his last breath. Even if it seems like this may be the largest and most important law to follow, the sad reality is that rights are indeed not equally contributed throughout the Earth’s population. As a due result of these inequalities people are losing opportunities to education, work, food, and life. Before we may prosper as a whole planet and begin to fix all global issues, we must first begin with helping ourselves. This is because problems cannot be aided without people being there to help fix it in the first place. If the whole planet was given equal rights, so many problems would be over right there; but because this doesn’t seem to be the case, I do agree that the process of acquiring equal rights to the citizens of the world is the number one criteria we are facing. This subject can easily be placed into a lecture of multiple classrooms, such as History, and there isn’t a clear reason not to.
On the other hand, I do believe that the female awakening is in fact a very important deal we are dealing with, but in my opinion there are so many more issues out there can be seen as more urgent. It isn’t that this issue is not important or significant enough; it is that other issues such as global warming and poverty that are hitting us every day with dramatic statistics which can lead to the destruction of our species and our planet. I do believe that this may be included in the curriculum, but not possibly as a major subject or study; this issue may be in fifth place. Replacing this issue in second position, I believe that poverty, hunger and disease is a very important issue to cover is classrooms. As I stated before, if equal rights was in fact available to everybody, more problems would be fixed. This also includes this particular problem because since it develops from the fact that most are denied clean water, food, and an education, it would exist or be such a major issue if all those people were treated with the rights they were born with. In a way, these two issues connect, so that could be an easier way to teach about these problems and add them to lectures in order to expand the global awareness.

  51. (Part Two)
The third most important issue concerning our planet is the drastic event of global warming. This problem is the main issue which effects every single individual living organism in this planet; this is because this is literally the only home in which we are all capable of living in. If we kill the Earth, then we kill ourselves and everything else. When it comes to including this is curriculums, I believe that it is absolutely crucial, because if we do not begin to teach people to care for the planet from an early start, soon enough it will be way too late to do anything possible. Also, just because it is such a popular, yet relatively subject to get into, this issue literally can fit into a class a million different ways. Nuclear proliferation, although it is the second to last issue on the top five, it is still one of the most dangerous and deadly threats that we are facing today. This is because the power to destroy absolutely everything is not coming over time or years, but instead by a push of a single button everything would be gone in an instant. Also, these days more and more countries are relying on these weapons to have a higher stance of threat, and so eventually conflicts between countries will completely dealt with using these nuclear hazards; this will result to such an extreme that a simple argument between leaders can lead to the end of humanity and everything on our planet. Although this may seem a topic a bit hasty to go into, it can be included into Biology, Chemistry, and other science classes during lessons on nuclear power.
