  1. After exploring the website of both the New York Times and the BBC, I came to the conclusion that the BBC would be a better source to check on a daily basis. I am happy to say I was the editor and chief of my middle school newspaper and found to my satisfaction the information is laid out in an organized, simple manner which appeals to readers. When I was on the homepage of the New York Times, I felt overwhelmed. It is presented like a printable newspaper providing too much information at one time. In the BBC homepage, once you select “more from BBC news”, different issues happening around the globe appear. The side panel gives you the option to pick a specific part of the world to inquire about, as well as different topics such as entertainment. On the top of the screen there a ticker tape informing the readers of the latest news. In contrast, the New York Times website, with such extensive information, would make it more difficult to find news on a certain topic because there is so much to choose from which is both good and bad. On the positive side, it gives you a variety of opinions, but on the negative end of the spectrum, it also makes it harder to decide which of those sources is reliable. In addition, I am inclined to conclude the BBC gives a more “global” view. Most of the news presented on the homepage of the news section is from other parts of the world. This is good for us because we hear about problems in our country constantly, but we seldom hear about problems happening out of the country. In addition, we can read from a different perspective. In other words, from journalists who are foreign. This will help to inform those who wish they knew more about global problems. Checking the BBC daily would also give us a different opinion on issues going on here because the BBC is from the UK.

  2. I am no stranger to the BBC or New York Times websites. I've checked them both for years and have found them reliable sources. However, after looking at them again, I would have to say that the BBC offers more content and is better organizes.
First off, the BBC wins in the content area by sheer number of pages. Because of the BBC's scope, it can cover a vast amount of seemingly unrelated content. The BBC has a numerous amount of projects, from one documenting regional variations in accent over the UK to a program for learning Welsh. This mass variety gives the BBC a huge advantage over the New York Times, which sticks to news and country profiles.
Secondly, the BBC has a nice layout. It is easy to find things because they are logically organized. The New York Times layout is not particularly appealing since it is very dry and harsh. Reading the test on the BBC seems easier, as well.
The BBC search engine is clean and provides good results. The New York Times's search engine is a little odder and the results provided may not always be what one wants.
Viewing the Times' older articles requires a subscription, but the BBC simply has a banner stating "This page is no longer updated". This is useful when looking for old articles for free.
One advantage of the Times is that the advertisements are not as obvious as the BBC. The BBC has a very large ad at the top, while the Times has a few smaller ones spread about. The ad for the BBC is right above the search bar, meaning that one's hand may stray into clicking on the ad rather than searching for news.
Overall, I would have to say that I prefer the BBC. It is better organized and easier to use than the New York Times. Both, however, are great resources.

  3. Part 1 of 2:

The BBC and the New York Times/International Herald Tribune (IHT) are both indispensable, reliable resources. However, if I had to select only one to view on a regular basis, I would prefer the BBC. Initially, I am utterly impressed by the layout of the BBC. The BBC is much more organized than the New York Times/IHT. The New York Times/IHT seems setup just like a regular newspaper, and this can make it confusing. There is an extreme amount of information on the front page, but this overwhelms me and makes it difficult to find exactly what I am searching for. On the other hand, the BBC is much more organized in the way it presents information. There are only some top stories on the front page, and then there are links to certain subsections on the bottom that will help me retrieve information depending on what I am searching for. The New York Times/IHT also has these links, but they can get a bit lost amidst all the other different headings. Moreover, in my opinion, in terms of information and content, which is really the most important thing, the BBC wins out. There is a “world” focus on both of these gateways to information, but the BBC is definitely a greater source of international and global information. On the front page, the BBC shows that it focuses less on the U.S. and the Americas and has a great variety of information relating to the world, in general. This, in my opinion, is important because many times good information regarding other regions of the world is difficult to acquire, even though it is important to be informed of worldwide events in order to become true global citizens.

  4. Part 2 of 2:

Furthermore, as I looked through both, I decided to test the search bar. This is of critical importance, as the majority of people will most likely be searching for information when they come upon the BBC or New York Times/IHT. The search bar is the tool that is most frequently utilized to rapidly search for needed or wanted information on a daily basis. Well, the BBC search bar seems to be superior to that of the New York Times/IHT and provides much better results. For example, I typed in “Italy” in both search engines. In the New York Times/IHT, the first thing that appears on the top is two ads for traveling to Italy. This is most likely not what anyone searching for information on Italy wants. Also the BBC has a country profile on Italy that the New York Times lacks. Apart for this, the BBC not only has recent articles regarding Italy, but it also possesses some articles that are older but that may also be imperative. Moreover, the BBC is much more useful for finding quick facts such as the weather in Italy or sports news than the New York Times/IHT. In general, I prefer that way the BBC search engine is organized (into more recent news and older news that is still important today). In the New York Times, in order to find important older news, I would have to search for all news in the last 12 months or all results since 1851. That would mean too many unimportant articles would come up. Finally, the BBC has many features that that New York Times/IHT lacks. For example, the TV channels are a great way of finding all types of information, from information on global affairs to fun facts about animals on Animal Planet, in a fun and organized way. This is a feature that can attract many people, just like it has attracted me, which the New York Times/IHT lacks and does not match. Some of the videos and information on there can be a break from ones daily routine and provide some information which is not found in newspapers. This feature, along with some of the other things I have mentioned, also demonstrates that the BBC seems to have a greater outlook or scope of information. Finally, I have mentioned many reasons why I would prefer the BBC over the New York Times/IHT in terms of viewing it on a daily basis, but the BBC also offers something that can be helpful for anyone in any part of the world. The fact that the BBC gives news in 32 languages is something that is unmatched by the New York Times/IHT. In the “Americas” part of the New York Times/IHT, the news is in English and relates only to Latin America, but if I choose to view the news in Spanish in the BBC, I will get not only Spanish news about Latin America, but also global news in Spanish. This means that anyone, from any country, can utilize the BBC to search not only information in their own region, but around the world as well. Hence, although both information pathways are good and reliable resources of information, I believe the BBC would be the best selection for me, or anyone around the world, to view on a daily basis.

  5. It is true that both site are really informational and helpful in finding information, but in my opinion the BBC website is more effective than the The New York Times (NYT). To begin with, the BBC website has a really easy to spot news. The reason is that it has bigger letters and each top story is easy to follow. Also, it is divided into clear sections that allow the visitor to comfortably have a quick look to what is going on in his areas of interests. In the NYT the font is really small.. making it hard to follow the news. In addition, the top stories are all spread out through the page catching less attention from the viewers.
Antoher important feature that I compared was the search options of the each website, which is of great importance for it shows the efficacy of each website to inform about a certain topic. After searching the topic "War in Afghanistan", the NYT gave the latest news, in article forms. In the BBC not only gave you the information in the article form, but also when you clicked on the link of the article, it provided you with the link of other articles that gave you more background information on the topic researched. This feature could be of great use in a daily basis to find out more information on different topics.
As result, the BBC is more efficient in delivering global information to its viewers than the NYT because it is easier to manipulate and it provides more information with the same click of an article. This proves to be of more use in a daily basis.

  6. The FIRST difference I noticed between the International Herald Tribute/New York Times and BBC was how the information was set up. In the NWT and the IHT the information is like all over the place and unorganized. There are so many things in the page that you don’t know where to find what you are looking for. It’s like they crammed a bunch of information in that page and the letters are small too so it’s not easy to find stuff. In the BBC, everything is organized into pretty little categories boxes and it makes it much easier to find what you’re looking for. Also, it has a section on the side for you to pick the language you want the website to be in which is a pretty good thing because people from all over the world could understand what is on the website and not only people who know English could use the site… You even have a clock at the top, weather, radio and TV options and a children section. Overall, I think this is the best website to check on an everyday basis because it is quicker to find information and what you’re looking for, while on the IHT and the NYT it seems like you have to search all over the place and it does not seem very practical…

  7. It is due to its simple profile, the vast amount of information and its easy and fast access to links and news, that I consider the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) site to be a better source of information. Through this website, you are able to access global news and also view the current situation in the US from a less bias point of view. Data bases as the “New York Times” give you a clear perspective of global news; however, their organization is not as neat as the BBC. Their site has less accessibility that the BBC, which makes the site a more complex and less manageable. Moreover, the BBC grants you the access to 13 BBC TV channels and several radio stations, giving the site a grater variety of resources and several ways to communicate the news in order to perfectly adjust themselves to the user's necessity. Another helpful feature in this site, is the ability they give the user to set the page in order to fit their needs, giving you access to delete or open any desired or undesired information, which allows you to have a site that will only display the topics of interest. Its various languages are another helpful function, disregarding the fact that I may not use this feature; it is an admirable aspect for it grants access to the worldwide population. The BBC is a site that I would use on a regular basis to keep in touch with the world occurrences and the current issues affecting our planet. Its excellence and diversity allows me to become informed in a fast, easy and comfortable manner.

  8. The truth. The real unfiltered truth that everyone deserves. All though it is more complex, it still has valid information that if the right mind puts in effort to understand can understand. It gives the majority of us that want to pursue the knowledge a great deal of words. There is a difference between these two news editions for a reason. In my opinion, the BBC gives a better point of view, a better amount of information that can make a big difference if you look them both up. I am not saying that just because one is expressed differently that it should be judged for the words. However, the quality is still a significant thing. The BBC is the one that gives vast information. New York Times is good if you want to know just the basics, but the BBC is has the best value.

  10. After comparing both the New York Times and the BBC, I definitely have to say that the BBC is a better source of information. The BBC and the New York Times are very effective in providing information but the BBC makes it easier to find information. The BBC is very well organized as a website. The NYT is a little less organized making it a lot harder to find information on a certain headline. Everything on the page is together. The articles are barely have space to present themselves and are all bundled up together on the home page. I was overwhelmed with the information I received. Once you click on a source from the New York Times, you are presented with a bunch of information and cannot focus on the main point of the article. The BBC is more defined and efficient. The BBC is also a better source of global information rather than the New York Times. It is easy to find content on other countries world wide on the BBC. It has headlines and subheadings that can give you countless information on the topic which is extremely helpful. New York Times focuses more on America rather than the rest of the world. We need to be informed of everything happening globally if we are going to be leaders of tomorrow. The BBC is generally a better source than the New York Times. It is more efficient and definitely more organized making it an overall better site. This site can be used on a regular basis considering the amount of work we have to do relating to global topics.

  11. I believe that the BBC had so much more to offer. Yes the NYT has enough information to keep the average reader looking for quite some time; however the BBC just has absolutely everything you could need. From the vast amounts of information, to interesting little facts and strange stories. How to plan your next vacation; It just has everything you could need, taking it many steps further from the plain 'Here is the news, enjoy' point of view that most other stations have. For this reason I consider this site better.

  12. Dull, basic, and just too broad. All though for the average person this be interesting and well put, it still doesn't compare to the better quality that is the BBC. The NYT is what most average people would consider going to for information but for those who feel that it is best to receive the better knowledge they would stand by the BBC. Lets say for example, that there is a new update on the troops in Iraq. The NYT might tell the public, "breaking news, ten Troops killed on a bomb war in Iraq" while in the BBC the information would be put in a better quality as in, "In today’s news, 200 Iraqian civilians killed along with ten U.S. troop members because of an accidental bombing made in the area". Still the same basic reading but as you can see the NYT left out an important part of what had happened. If people just consider reading or listening to the BBC, people would get a better update of what is happening around the world. More knowledge is the best kind! Why wouldn't we take advantage of this experience?

  13. Exploring both New York times and BBC I feel stronger towards BBC due to the fact that it has summaries of all the different features that are available for you to read instead of you having to read all the articles to find which one you are interested in. There is a one minute video that summarizes the news of the day. What the editor thinks is most important appears at the top of the page. To me that is perfect because we get to see someone else’s point of view, the most emailed, and most read so we can be aware. On the other hand, New York times does not have that. I like to see what people find interesting because then there’s a possibility that I may like it too. My favorite part however is that not only do they have news but they have the W and W which is the “weird and Wonderful”, which have alot of interesting stories. Also, in New York Times their website is more like a newspaper there is too much information all at the same time while BBC is more of where you choose what you want to read. This website is in 32 languages from which you can choose from. I find this website to be the best for me because they made it very simple to find what I’m looking for. BBC is more reliable and in my perspective more organized, because when I look things up in New York Times I do not always find what I want. So in my opinion, BBC is better due to these reasons which are stated above. I think that for someone who wants to know what is going on around the world should go see this website because it has a lot of information from different countries and you can read it in any language you’d like.

  14. Upon my exploration of various news sources, I came to the conclusion that The BBC News best suits my personal needs.
Foremost, its aesthetically pleasing homepage is organized into different topics, which allows easy acess to content pertaining to said topics. The New York Times website however, is overwhelmingly crowded, making it difficult to navigate through the site.
Furthermore, the BBC News is very user friendly and provides a diverse range of options. Users can check the weather, keep up with stock market updates, and read articles on almost any topic in 32 different languages. The Worldpress provides a more limited range of options, and the New York Times does not allow users to acess these options as easily.
Most importantly, is the content of the articles themselves. The BBC makes a greater effort to provide two- sided , completely factual information, whereas the New York Times tends to focus more on the American perspective of events to appeal to this particular audience.

  15. Because of its easy setup and organization, a great amount of informative links and news are easy to access in a quick amount of time, which I find to be the reason that the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) website to a better source of information. BBC gives a great access to news around the world but also lets us view recent or current situations occurring in the United States but in a way in which it is not opinion based. Other search engines such as the New York Times do provide worthy global information but not in such an organized way as BBC provides. BBC also grants a variety of sources from which they obtain information. Another helpful function that BBC provides is the ability to provide the news in varies languages which are a great way to expand their viewers. This function isn’t something that directly affects me but it is nice to know that BBC wants to make their information accessible around the world rather then focused in just one country. That isn’t something I see very much. I honestly don’t constantly follow current events around the world through the internet but if I were to do it more often, I would trust BBC to deliver the correct and useful information I’m interested in researching. I find BBC to quite efficient and show that they are not indifferent in providing information to the public. Global topics are an important subject in our studies and BBC would provide the research I would need.

  16. Both the New York Times and British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) news websites are extremely good to gather information. However they both give different information. The New York Times gives an ampful amount of specific information that would make it difficult for someone that wants to find the information that they need. On the other hand, the BBC has a variety of information and it gives the reader what they would like to read. It does not bring unwanted inforomation that the New York Times sometimes brings. For example, if one person is searching for information on the water found on the moon, BBC would give you a few interesting links while The New York Times would give you many useless links that seem to not touch the subject much. The New York Times also focuses on American-related areas while the BBC focuses on world-related areas. Also, BBC is more formal and professional when it comes to it's articles and what it contains. Overall, I prefer BBC over the New York Times because it gives interesting and wanted information, easier to access the information, and it is more formal and professional.

  17. After rigorously examining both the BBC and the New York Times I came to the conclusion that the BBC was the source I preferred to obtain information. Both of these websites are incredible they offer just vast amounts of information. It’s quite astonishing to think that not to long ago such a thing would have only been a fantasy, in terms of having such amounts of information with such ease. There are many different aspects about the BBC that I prefer over the New York Times. You may think that because these are both websites that provide people with information their cant be many differences, but there is. Almost as soon as you launch the BBC page you can tell the differences it has between it and the New York Times. Information isn’t scattered everywhere instead it is nicely organized under large headings that can be easy found throughout the page, but the best thing is that there isn’t to many of them. Which I think is a major problem with the, it is easy to find yourself lost and overwhelmed when browsing through their page. The New York Times page isn’t as easy to navigate through there is so much writing on the page and other topics it’s hard to find exactly what you want. It’s also not as aesthetically pleasing then the BBC, you can think of the New York Times as a black and white newspaper compared to the BBC, which is full of color. The BBC even lets you customize it letting you change the colors scheme. Although between these two websites you don’t have to worry about which one has more reliable information, both are great sources of information and you can always be curtain that the information it true.

  18. BBC and NY Times are just two of the best news broadcast that exist now days. they both provide us with easy access to the top news of the day; however, they do this in different ways and that defines how better one is. If I had to choose between the two of them, I would choose BBC for the following reasons: First,BBC's main page provides us with many more options than Ny Times like many top stories, sports, weather, children, world service, travel, T.V channels, radio and so much more! While Ny Times is just pure news, which are obviously the main focus of both websites, but BBC makes it more interesting to look for news. Second, BBC informs you with not only the new posts, but the old ones as well, which gives you a better point of view of the issue you are looking at. Last, but not least, BBC is from Great Britain, while Ny Times is from U.S and that makes BBC more interesting because it presents an entire different point of view of life than the one that Ny Times gives because we know how life is through the American Eyes but not through the eyes of British or Europeans and it is interesting to see how they think of issues.

    ReplyDelete
  19. To me, the New York Times is vastly superior than the BBC for many apparent reasons. Even though the BBC offers more than the New York Times, it is completely useless to me. I could see how news being in 32 languages could be useful to some, but with my knowledge of only English and Spanish, 30 of those languages are wasted. Also, after seeing the BBC America channel, I failed to see how a show about aliens trying and humans fighting could be relevant to world issues.
Also, when it comes to organization I believe the New York Times wins the BBC yet again. The New York Times has a lot of articles that are organized into different sections on the front page that are constantly being updated while the BBC takes a extremely simple approach and has one small section dedicated to articles and the rest to dedicated to entertainment, like its many channels, radio stations, and travel. Furthermore, the New York Times regularly updates its articles while the BBC takes its time to change articles.
To sum it up, the New York Times is superior to the BBC when it comes to the quality and quantity of information. The BBC would be better for someone who wants to find entertainment and waste time because of its many useless features to those seeking knowledge like the channels, radios, and travel; just to name a few.

  20. I have reviewed both the websites of the BBC and of the New York Times/IHT. I came to the conclusion that the BBC is far more organized, has information to offer in more languages than the NYT/IHT, and it is more diverse in options. Their web page has international TV, world service radio, international weather, and news in 32 languages, to name a few. The BBC is better at reaching people's wants for an ideal "newspaper". The NYT/IHT lacks organization of topics and crucial options to the people. The BBC offers more global news than the NYT/IHT, and from journalists around the world.

  22. After surfing both BBC’s website and The New York Times’ website I came to conclusion that I would prefer to go to the BBC’s website more often than The New York Times’ website. The BBC website is much more organized than The New York Times’ website. The New York Times’ homepage seems like a real newspaper with information everywhere. It seems like the editors tried to jam a lot of information into a little space that they had, while the BBC website seems spread out and you are not overwhelmed by all the information all in the home page. The home page of the New York Times has a lot of ads and can get distracting while the BBC website has less ads and less pop out in the website. The search engines are also different. If you type in “New York” for example in the BBC website and in The New York Times’ website, different information will pop up. The New York Times’ website will have information about how to get there, which might not be what you are looking for, while the BBC website will have different top stories about New York. The BBC website has more features than The New York Times’ website. The BBC website has TV channels, radio, weather, etc. and shows up having more resources than the New York Times’ website does. All in all, if I had to choose which website to go on a daily basis, I would prefer the BBC website due to the fact that it is not crammed up like the New York Times’ website.

  23. When it comes down to the specifics I would without a doubt choose to have the BBC as means of informing myself on Global News on a daily basis. In their core both sites offer similar services and both provide good and reliable information. On the pro side, both sites provide Global News and both sites can without doubt be deemed as reliable information, as well they offer different services such as Video's for viewing, movies likewise, stocks for businesses, index's, etc. They also have different sections in which they classify their stories, such as most recent, most read, and in general what is considered amongst the site to be 'top stories'; so when it comes down to classification of articles both sites are rather equaled but the real difference occurs when one takes account the layout, format, and ease of use of both websites - essentially its organization. The NYT (New York Times) website is made to appear like a newspaper, although creative this approach makes the text very small and bunched up together, thus making it hard for any visitor to fully appreciate or acknowledge the vast amount of information and articles the site has to offer- due to its clustered organization. On the other hand however, the BBC website is very organized into different areas within the website in which a visitor would click on to go to wherever he or she needs/wants to read upon. The font is easily readable, and very spaced out throughout the main page which is vital as a visitor not only wants a respectable site for information, but one that is easy to use as well. Also, the BBC does offer a couple services that the NYT does not, such as Radio services, 13 different TV Stations provided by the BBC, 32 different languages for reading, and a couple other minor details. These reasons support my belief as to why the BBC is better than the NYTimes - and why if I had to choose in between the BBC and NYTimes for information I would without questions choose the BBC.

  24. BBC wins the match on which news center is the best compared to New York Times, hands down. Not only does BBC provide the reader with sufficient information to satisfy them fully, but it also has unique details that make it not only more interesting, but encourages the reader to learn more about the world and what’s going on in it. Personally, I myself don’t really enjoy searching for news. My motto is “if it’s important, I’ll hear about it when I need to”. But to be absolutely honest, I could not restrain myself from taking a gander at BBC’s site when I read about all it contains. With things like “Weird and Wonderful” and “History on this Day”, how could I not want to take a peek at this website. Even my parents, typical Spanish speaking adults decided to join me as I surfed the BBC site because of the fact that it had “World Service”. Compared to the New York Times, which is intended for the English speaking public, the BBC provides more detailed information referring to world issues and news. The New York Times seems more like a quick summary of things that are going on. Why would one search world news or problems if they’re only going to read a summary instead of a full story on what’s happened or happening? Although it’s convenient for someone who’s just looking to have something to talk about, New York Times isn’t really the place to go looking for things in depth. Not only that but it is just a terribly boring site that just makes me not even want to open the link. Thumbs up for BBC.

  25. As I examined these two articles, I came to the conclusion that the bbc suited my interests best. Due to the fact that it is more explanitory, it nurishes me with information that is important for me to know. Some citizens in America are not informed as broadly as the bbc incorporates it's information. The bbc does it's job as a descriptive website to give out information to those that do not understand or comprehend the issues that are occuring around the world and the different circumstances that people are in. I personally believe that if there were more broad articles such as the bbc, then people would be more enthusiastic to help the environment and the people living in it. Students and citizens alike will be more empathetic towards the issues and they would be more concerned about people's suffering than the minor issues they are going through.

  26. Both the NY Times and the BBC are very good in different ways. They both show news happening across the world. After looking at both the BBC and the NY Times I think the BBC is a lot better for me. When comparing both the links I thought that the BBC showed me a lot of valuable information and articles about many different things. Even when you just look at the home page you see all the things you can find on this website. It gives u information and now just news but things you can do to help and things that are being done for the problem. The BBC shows you opinions on different people around the world not just Americans. BBC is more organized when it comes to showing the many different things being said. The sections help you find things a lot easier and help you get to what you are looking for faster. The BBC shows both old and the new updates on the news and will keep it updated. The BBC for me is a lot easier for me to use and I can understand it and I will defiantly be using the website a lot.
