ANATOMY OF THIS BLOG -- PART IV: THE WORLD'S MEDIA AT YOUR FINGERTIPS!

Today's post is about one of the most exciting features of this blog: the global news gathering and editing service known as WorldPress.

Only a few years ago, if you wanted to know what the international media were saying about a major (or minor) news story, you had to (A) live in a major city; (B) go to the main library and search among the few international publications available; or (C) subscribe at significant expense to those publications that merited your interest.

Today, thanks to the founders and editors of WorldPress, the world's media is at your fingertips! Just a click on the WorldPress link (below, on the right-hand side) will take you to the major newspapers, magazines and news centers around the world -- an incredible wealth of relevant, professionally selected news articles from every corner of the world!

As we try to achieve what Robert Hanvey called "Perspective Consciousness" -- the understanding that we all have a local, national or cultural perspective through which we view (and often distort) reality -- WorldPress is an invaluable tool to develop our global awareness as global citizens.

WorldPress provides a never-ending supply of possibilities to enrich the lives of our students. What news stories are important in other parts of the world? How do they differ from our media's priorities? Why? What similarities and differences can students note between their local/national news coverage and other global perspectives? What are the implications of differences in perspective for foreign policy? For global peace?

Do you want to know what the Egyptian newspapers were saying about Secretary Clinton's visit? Or what "The People's Daily" in Beijing said about President Obama's visit? Perhaps what the Arab media has to say about the latest Middle East flare-up? Just click the WorldPress link and you will know!

IN THE MIDDLE SECTION OF THE FRONT PAGE of the website you will find "In The Spotlight," a kind of "global front page" that gives you the main global stories and a summary of each article. Clicking on any entry will send you to the full article.

ON THE LEFT COLUMN you find a handy guide that gives you links, among others, to "World News," and "Features," (such as "Country Maps and Profiles", "Documents in the News," etc.)

The World News section is organized by region. Under that heading you also find "World Headlines" and "World Newspapers." Do you want to know what bloggers around the world are writing about? Just click "World Blogs" and you will find a carefully selected list, by region, of some of the most influential blogs in the planet.

ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PAGE you will find "Today's World Headlines." You may want to compare these headlines to your local newspapers'. What differences do you see? Why?

Do you want to know what the global media are writing regarding a specific story or issue? Go to the UPPER LEFT CORNER OF THE PAGE, enter the topic and click on "Search." That's it!

Check out all the other features of WorldPress! Once you become familiar with this website, you are likely to insist on checking it before making up your mind on any issue of importance.

"Is my perspective on target?" Compare it with other global perspectives before you decide.

Enrich your life and have fun with WorldPress!

Until soon....

  1. The WorldPress link is very useful in comparing and contrasting the point of view of different press all around the globe. With this tool, I searched the topic of the War in Afghanistan. There, I found two sources from two parts of the world: " Al Qaeda: A Global Phenomenon Reaching Maturity" by Ioannis Michaletos, from Athens, Greece. And, "Countering Jihadi Strategies in the Subcontinent" by Dr. Walid Phares, from the United States.
In these sources they both discuss the situation of Al-Quaeda and the war on terrorism. They both agree that there is a great concentration of them in Afghanistan, an dthey are covered up by a great metropolis where an attack of bombing would result in many casualties. They also highlight the carefulness the procedures must be dealt with in those areas because such terrorist groups are moved by a ideologist force.
The source from the US stresses the fact that all this war has to be fought in Afghanistan and the middle east because that is where Osama is beleived to be. On the other, the Greek source disagrees and states taht although it is true that terrorist groups have found safe heaven on those grounds, the terrorsit groups such as Al-Quaeda is powered by a Jihad (Holy War) based idiology. They have been able to infliltrate all those thoughts and ideas to many Muslims all around the Globe. They have even been able to get into the inside of American intelligence and gave place to 9/11. As a result, the greek publisher strongly believes that the issue of Al-Quaeda should be treated in global strategy rather than in a region besed strategy. The American publisher believes in contrast that by giving death to Osama, Al-Quaeda's leader. Michaletos, disagrees with this statement due to the fact that Al-Quaeda is a ideals based organization, they would rather martyrize the figure of Obama and continue terrorising with in the name of the Jihad.
As demonstrated, WorldPress allows us to compare and contrast point of view all over the world at the tip of our fingers. Also, it teaches us that in different regions of the world people have different opinions, and similar perseptions of an issue. This could be used in the search of the truth of an issue, which can contribute to the effort of becoming a global leader.

  2. Around the world, people are constantly being updated on the news by the publications in their geographical region. Most countries have a variety of newspapers and publications. Three publications that impressed me were the “BBC”, the “New York Times”, and “China Daily”.
The “BBC” interested me because of the news it provided its readers. Most of the news concerned issues from around the world. It gave a different point of view about some topics that are going on right under our noses. It allows the readers to see global issues from a different point of view, which is instrumental in forming your own opinion on a subject. In addition, it provided in depth details about every country, including its capital, language, and even major religion.
It is my opinion that the “New York Times” is a good publication because it comes from our own country. Not only does it give well informed details on subjects concerning American citizens, but it covers many taking place all over the world. It has different sections for technology, travel, style arts, sports, business, and even regional news. This allows for a reader to have a well rounded idea of what is going on in the country, providing simple categories to find what you are interested in.
The final publication I choose was “China Daily”. I choose this publication because China is one of the leading nations in the world today. “China Daily” includes articles on what is going on in China including government, business around the world, other world news, culture, and many other topics. I think it is important that they have sections devoted to subjects such as government and culture because China is so foreign to people around the world due to its recent period of isolation. We are all aware of China’s growth, and this awareness is usually followed by curiosity. This publication to an extent covers all aspects of Chinese life, as well as life all over the world from their perspective.

  3. World Press was a great way to learn about things happening all around the world. It was incredibly useful as it provided lists of different newspapers from so many regions around the world. The recent rejection to swap nuclear fuel by the United States is something being covered by many newspapers around the world including The Australian and The Iran Focus. Both newspapers called the decision of the United States a blunt one including how the United States found that there was “nothing new” in the offer from Iran. The Australian and The Iran Focus are both able to agree on the fact that the foreign minister made propositions and efforts and how Iran should not waste away the opportunity they have. However, their opinions differ in many ways. The Iran Focus makes an effort to portray the government of Iran as one trying to make peace by saying their government is trying to diffuse the crisis that has come forward. The United States is portrayed slightly negatively as their warning to Iran of facing credible consequences is shown. The Iran Focus reinforces the statement made by Tehran that their nuclear program is for strictly peaceful purposes only. The Iran Focus ends their article on this event by showing the warnings the United States and the European Union sent to the government of Iran.
The Australian takes on a different opinion of the situation by portraying the United States as the positive ones and Iran as the negative. The Australian also mentions the suspicions many in the West have of Iran developing technology to build nuclear bombs, yet it does not put the same amount of reinforcements on the denial of such an idea made by Tehran. Iran is also portrayed negatively as The Australian brings in the Citigroup accounts that had belonged to Iran. There are people shown to be surprised by how much money from Iran had been flowing through the United States. While both newspapers may have many views in common, they differ in their opinions on which country should be portrayed negatively.
World Press has made it incredibly simple to access information from anywhere in the world at any time. We are able to learn more about the world and the opinions countries have on the events going on. All of these things can be used to our advantage to help us become more aware of what exactly is happening in the world.

  4. After researching through the WolrdPress.org website I have found this search engine to be useful in not only reading current events but learning the perspective and opinion from different writers around the world. I came across there two articles on a recent bombing that occurred in Baghdad. The first article was written on Dec.9, from the Middle East by a source known as the Times of Oman. The second article was written today Dec.13th, from Europe by a source known as Sky News. In general they both speak of how 127 people died on from the blasts that were targeting government sites in the Iraqi capital. But the article from Sky News focuses mainly on the lack of security and what they had the say about what occurred because of another bombing that had recently occurred with similar intentions. ‘The country's MPs have been questioning security chiefs over the protection provided by Iraqi forces. Last Tuesday's bomb attacks hit at the heart of government - one blast going off outside the labour ministry and another near the site of the new finance ministry building. "I can assure you our forces are capable of facing up the challenges we face on the ground," interior minister Jawad al-Bolani told Parliament. "We have in our ministry an information and investigation department which dedicates 50% of its work to the fight against terrorism." Also facing MPs was Lieutenant General Abboud Qanbar, who lost his job as head of Iraq's security forces following the December 8 bombings.’ Lt Gen Qanbar also told parliament how his department was warned about these planned attacks by the U.S. but that what had occurred didn’t match what they were told. The other article just specifies in detail on how many bombings there were, there specific locations, and the order that they were detonated. It doesn’t give much opinion on any background information besides the actual bombing. But the article does mention how the US and Britain led criticism, with UN chief Ban Ki-moon labeling the bombings “horrendous” and “unacceptable” and how the bombings had the “touch of Al Qaeda and the Baathists.” Besides these differences in the articles, they both sum up how 127 people died, 448 were wounded and, that now 13 people are in custody and are believed to have links to Al Qaeda.

  5. The World Press is a very informative cite with a bunch of information on many topics and the view on them from different nations. For example, the event that is taking place in Copenhagen and what people are doing to try to stop climate change. Both a magazine from the US and a newspaper from India inform us on the issue of climate change. The United States´ article talks about how the activists are reacting to what is happening. Some protestors were violent and even threw a rock at the police. The police arrested a myriad of people even though some protestors were also peaceful. The article is kind of hopeful because someone gave an example from history of how people protested and it worked and so hopefully the same will happen now with climate change. It also informs us on what was taking place in the meeting. It seems like China and the US had a little disagreement on who should have a bigger reduction in emissions. While this article focused more on the protest, the article from and Indian press focused more on China and the U.S. and how they clashed by saying to each other they should keep to their promise of carbon reduction. The article also talks about how India, Brazil, and China are being pressured by other counties to reduce their emissions. The US article has more of a focus for the climate change as a social issue and how the people are trying to stop climate change and also presenting a bit of a political side while the Indian article informs us on the issue as a political view and how the nations are reacting to climate change while trying to solve the problem…

  6. There are millions of different publications around the world that people inform themselves from such as newpapers, magazines and all different kinds of publications depending on the geographical area you are in. Two of the publications that interested me and caught my attention are actually two of the links that are on this website which are BBC and the New York Times. Another publication that caught my attention and appealed to me was the edmontion journal thats from Canada.
The BBC link is great. It has many different things like top stories, pictures, sports, and travel. One option that the BBC link offers is a tanslation in 32 different languages including french, brasil, and somali. The BBC link also has news about all media aspects such as rado and tv channels. This link also has topics about children, spotlight, business and money, weather, food, garden, and entertainment.Overall the BBC link has many things to offer and is great for people to keep themselves informend because of all the information it offers from around the world.
The New York Times is one of the links on this website that appelaed to me. The New York Times link caught my attention because it is well known all around the world and its in our very own country which is a plus because it focuses a little bit more on issuses going in the United States instead of always focusing on global issues. The NYT has alot of things to offer as well. The NYT has a lot of information regarding american citizens and issues that are going on in the United States plus style, dining, technology, top stories and phots, books, movies, and music. The New York Times link is definitly a great link to use and its a great way to get informed about both global news and local news.
The other link that appealed to me is this Canadian newspaper "The Edmonton Journal". This journal also has a lot to offer like the BBC and NYT links. It offers news, opinions, business, sports, entertainment, life, health, technology, and much more. It also has offers and specials and contests. It also has world and national news plus its own local canadien news. This is a good link that can informs people on both global and local news but it does focus more on local canadian news rather then global.

  7. Countless publications exist around the world. Ranging from region and nationality the same situation may be told infinite many ways. It is the newspaper’s responsibility to inform the readers in the most accurate and impartial way when stating such evidence.
A good publication should encompass a wide area of diversified topics ranging from the latest political scandal to local weather and sports. Using the World Press website one may find a number of newspapers and magazines in order to educate oneself on the perspective of neighboring countries and theirs opinions on such matters. The following publications do that and more…
Kenya’s Newspaper “The East African” from Nairobi is one of such publications. It offers political cartoons voicing the people’s point of view, special reports, World news, real-estate, agriculture, environment, education, travel, art & literature as well as commentaries and a number of other useful articles on a bounty of different subjects.
Greece’s “Ta Nea” from Athens is also diverse in the sense that it offers many options such as culture, cartoons, health, sports, opinions, icons, legal news, world news.
Likewise America’s “New York Times” is included because it contains many links and articles on world subjects as well as local activities. NY Times is a very well known and up- to –date newspaper with a large archive of political, social, and environmental news.
One of the great things about WorldPress.org and the publications it prescribes it that it names the region, the website and category in which it falls under. For example, Liberal, conservative, independent, and government owned, etc. This useful fact may help the reader reach a better view of certain groups’ perspectives and opinions. These and many other publications may open your eyes and each in its own way provides you with a piece of the puzzle to better understand the world we live in.

  8. The World Press website, www.worldpress.org, provides the reader with countless resources on daily world news from different geographical locations. One news site, IRIN for the United Nations, particularly interested me because the United Nations is such a powerful and influential leader in today’s world that many of the stories published are probably centered on other countries or leaders, and the United Nations’ involvement with those parties. Stories being covered by the IRIN include the UN climate change talks in Copenhagen, and Yemen child soldiers. This publication was extremely interesting to me and really caught my eye in the midst of the other world newspapers since the United Nations is somewhat in the center of all other foreign and international relations. Another publication that was eye catching as well as educational was Bitter Lemons, an online weekly which gives both the Israeli and Palestinian views. Since these territories are feuding and constantly at odds, it is interesting to read about the differentiating perspectives and the differing opinions of Israelites and Palestinians. The last publication was The Holy See Newspaper from Vatican City, which is a religious newspaper from the Catholic “headquarters” of the world. This newspaper brings news from the Vatican as well as other events and dates going on in the liturgical year. People would not often think of this newspaper as being relevant or even influential in world news but it actually is very significant and important as the Pope has a very high position of power and authority. So, news from the Vatican is just as relevant as news from the New York Times or the Miami Herald. In conclusion, worldpress.org gives a variety of informative and educational publications about world news and events depending on the different geographical locations.

  9. From my venture to 3 regionally distinct publications : The Trinidad and Tobago Guardian, The Irish Examiner, and The Assam Tribune (India) I found The Assam Tribune especially intriguing and to my liking more than the other two. The Assam Tribune gives valuable and specific information central to India. In my opinion, it is important to have a publication that pertains to that area or region. Many other publications; like The Irish Examiner feature news about America and what is occurring there. Although it is not an extreme downfall to have American news on a publication from a different region; it does take away the focus of what that publication is about. Having American news in regards to your country is comprehensible. However, when the American news put forth on a non-American publication has no relevance to that country is when views are challenged. For example, in the Irish Examiner, news about Tiger Woods is mentioned. Through this you can see that they are interested in sports and what is occurring in the sport’s world. There is nothing wrong with this, however, I believe it should be more informative. Of course you have newspapers that do not serve so much for the informative persuasion and that is why I preferred The Assam Tribune. The Assam Tribune had news that affected and was related to India. Yes, it also had it’s views and triumphs in the media, but it made you aware of distinct things going on in that region. It informed you of what was occurring and problems being faced. That is what publications should do; inform someone. You should feel like you have learned more from that publication and experienced a different view, and that is what I encountered in The Assam Tribune.

  10. China: Media Summit Participants Should Push for Press Freedom

I enjoyed this article greatly because it was unafraid to express a great wrongdoing on the behalf of a powerful. It presents strong points and then supports them accurately. It does not give any personal opinion on behalf of the author, thus proving that it is no editorial. It uses straight facts and quotes to support the ideas it presents. I also liked that the sources which it uses to prove its points seemed, in my personal opinion, to be reliable sources. For example, “Participants at the World Media Summit, to be held in Beijing on October 8-10, should use the opportunity to urge the Chinese government to respect press freedom and stop its routine harassment, detention, and intimidation of journalists, Human Rights Watch said.” Not only do I find the source to be reliable, but the quote provided from the source drew me in immediately. I selected this article as a favorite of mine because it provides hope and pushes for the human rights of others in an unbiased.

Public Schools in Sierra Leone Gasping for Life Support

I found this article to be a very good one. Foremost, it caught my eye because it seemed to be an article that would express sympathy and compassion for others. It was, and even more importantly to me, it showed sympathy for the struggle youth of our world. I also found it to be a favorite of mine because it expressed the importance of education and educators. It conveyed the idea that educators are not valued as they should be in society. I agree with this statement, that they are undervalued. I was also drawn to this article because I loved the way that it seemed to encourage donation and philanthropy. I believe that if a human has the resources and power to help better the life of another in need, that it should be done, whether it may be insignificant to their lives or not. This article seemed to emphasize this.

Honduras: Stop Blocking Human Rights Inquiries

I chose this article as another favorite mostly because it was another exposure of the denial of Human Rights across the globe. The article emphasizes that the investigations toward violation of human rights and police abuse showed be further supported and enforced. Once again, the article is able to state points and support using other sources, not once proving to be an editorial. It used sources that I believed to be reliable, again, like the Human Rights Watch organization and others. The article was able to show how some action is starting to be taken. For example, in recent news, investigations into numerous killings and alleged excessive use of force by officials have begun. The article was able to depict how powerful and corrupt some governments have the capability to me. I chose this article because it was an eye opener.

  11. One of the benefits offered by World Press is the ability granted to the reader to view different nation’s perspectives on a particular issue. The G-20 Summit created a world wide impact; here is what Trinidad and Malaysia have to say in regards of this topic:

The Government is having a great deal of difficulty in persuading a skeptical population that [the G-20] summit will bring any tangible benefits to Trinidad and Tobago. … There is an uneasy feeling that in building international conference centers, international financial centers and making a case for a personal jet, Prime Minister Patrick Manning has lost sight of the basic needs and necessities of T&T. … Of course the final G-20 communiqué may not be that important. After the November 2008 summit in Washington a statement was released indicating that the leaders had agreed to fight protectionism. Since then 17 of the 20 countries have introduced new protectionist measures.
Trinidad & Tobago Express, Apr. 6

The G-20 Summit last Thursday was projected as a success because it agreed to provide $1 trillion to help developing countries. The reality is far more sobering. … The trillion figure was what caught the headlines. But as serious analysis shows, this figure purporting to be new money was more hype than reality. Some of it had already been decided long before the Summit, and some of it reflected only an intention rather than concrete pledges. … Nevertheless, the majority of developing countries are absent from the G-20 table, and thus the G-20 does not have international legitimacy. The United Nations is the better venue for discussion and decision-making on the global economy and the way out of the crisis, with a greater chance that the interests of developing countries will be taken care of.
    Malaysia Star, Apr. 6

In these two scripts from different news reports in these two nations, we are able to view the worries of both nations separately. We are able to view the different thoughts and concerns they have with regards of the G-20 Summit. This miracle is thanks to the detonated job of the Word Press industry.

  12. The Worldpress website gives us in-depth details of news that happen around the globe. It eliminates every type of bias and gives us the actual global perspective of the event. The point of view given in articles published in this blog, are examined by professionals that analyze the event and gives a balance judgement based on various differen beliefs and points of view that cancel each other out, just like a “Check-and-Balance System”.
To show the convenience of the advantages presented above, I have spotted the same topic but with different publishers, and that will truly support my opinion of Worldpress. For example, easily devised, after being in the top stories, or “On the Spotlight” (as they preferred calling it) an article named: “Illusion of Obama's Peace Talks” and it expresses the idealism that President Obama is putting in practice, since the attempt of making Palestinians and Israel befriend is just that; and attempt. This article really shows the excellent intension of Obama trying to unify the middle east and it does so by explaining the processes Obama had to go through, to put in march this goal. First, Mitchell had to announce the upcoming plan, second, he had to re-announce it, and third he had to tell the Palestinians in person; however this article does much more than that. It also says how the Palestinians will never accept such a treaty since the U.S helped Israel to build towns while they were left to starve and therefore they feel totally betrayed.
On the other hand, “Starting the change”, an article from the NY times, gives us very biased information but it still talks about the same thing. It omits the informative part of why Palestinians will most likely never befriend Israel and why the U.S will never make them change their mind, and it goes straight into specialized detail in how spectacular it is from Obama to do this (which is also covered by Worldpress). I truly believe that is a result of perspective consciousness since the NY times is supposed to uphold the president’s thoughts and plans.
The above contrasts and similarities happen with every article published in each one of the sites and the Worldpress always convince us more than any other that is why the Worldpress is so incredibly useful and used.

  13. On Tuesday December 9, a bombing took place in Baghdad, Iraq. The story was covered by journalists in both Europe and Asia.
Both articles mention that there was a breach in security that allowed the bombings to happen. They both also acknowledge the possibility that Al- Quaeda initiated the attacks. But that is where the similarities end.
The Asian based article, titled "127 killed in Iraq blasts" focused mainly on the bombings themselves, describing in great detail how they were carried out and the casualties that ensued. The article also emphasized Iraq's instability, calling the nation "war -torn" and doubting the security of the nation.
The European based article however, titled "13 Suspects Arrested in Baghdad Blasts" focused mainly on the political aspect of the bombings. Its report was mainly about the relationship between Iraq and the U.S.; emphasizing how it has been strained, due to the U.S.'s failure to warn Iraq's government officials about the attacks in time. The article also mentioned the difficulty that Iraq's interior minister is having in preventing a political fallout over the bombings and furthermore, that the U.S. military arrested 13 suspected Al- Quaeda- linked terrorists.
It can be deduced, that the first source aims to appeal for security and peace in Iraq by portraying the violence taking place. It also wants to gain sympathy from other nations and excite its own people about the injustices taking place,by victimizing itself.
The second source however, prefers to focus less on the destruction that occurred and the plight of the civilians. Instead, its prime focus is on the leadership surrounding the conflict and the government proceedings that took place.
Due to the staggering diversity of the Worldpress, it is possible to access news information from sources all over the globe. As previously shown by the two articles, this diversity allows us to explore varying perspectives on world issues; broadening our own opinions and enabling us to become better global citizens.

  14. After reviewing the New York Times, The BBC, and the Times of Oman, I discovered that these newspapers and news sites are very much different, but have their overlaps, as do many informing newspapers.
The New York Times is an excellent publication. Although it comes from our nation, it is not so biased toward world news. This news publication offers a massive amount of reliable information and is not discreet about their sources and publications made to the newspaper. It also provides a wholesome amount of details that are essential to American citizens, while covering other important news elsewhere in the world. The New York Times has different sections that offer even more information about topics that are yet to be discussed. For instance, politics, travel, arts, sports, science, health, etc. This is a very well-rounded news publication.
The BBC publication is also a fabulous one. Even though this might be a much better news site than the New York Times or the Time of Oman, it is not a good organized publication. Organization is key to pleasing the audience. When you open an article, you find a superb amount of information and quality as well. This is one of my favorite publications because it specializes in world news, so it is less biased toward other nations. Plus, this publication offers a variety of extras, such as, news in 32 languages, TV channels, World radio, and much more. As you can see, this is a very thorough news publication.
My final choice for news publication, is the Time of Oman. This is a newspaper that brings news from the middle east and shares the problems and possible solutions to certain issues. Although this is not a greatly organized news publication, it provides a great deal of information of wars and issues concerning their citizens. I do not favor this news publication over the others, but I see that it is a news site that can be somewhat reliable. It can be biased toward the U.S, but is mostly concerned for their governments and their people. It can be useful when providing different opinions and perspective of theories to solutions or providing your own opinion, as well.

  15. Part 1 of 2:

Thanks to WorldPress, the world’s media truly is at anyone’s fingertips nowadays. This exquisite service not only provides an abundance of articles and of news that is virtually unmatched anywhere else, but it is truly outstanding for the global citizen trying to form a single perspective on any piece of information. WorldPress truly does allow anyone to raise their global awareness. There is virtually no other news provider that does such a tremendous job at showing all the different perspectives of any particular news. WorldPress even features a section that allows one to view almost any world newspaper. Hundreds of varying versions of the same story can be found in this one feature. However, apart from all these different newspapers, something that is even more impressive is that in one single article (that includes more than one article in it and shows two different publications), any reader can view different perspectives of numerous nations on any one issue. For example, President Obama’s budget plan was not only critical for the United States, but also for the world as a whole. Different nations had varying reactions to it, and the article called: “Obama’s Budget Plan” on WorldPress shows all these reactions. This magnificent article gives the reaction South Africa, India, Pakistan, China, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Japan had towards this budget plan. This article truly demonstrates the concept of perspective consciousness. This is evidenced by how it demonstrates the difference in the U.K.’s and Japan’s reaction by showing how the story is covered in The Economist (a newspaper from the U.K., a conservative newsmagazine from London) and The Asahi Shimbun (a Japanese newspaper, a center-left magazine from Tokyo) (on the same day).
Initially, both The Economist and The Asahi Shimbun have one similarity in terms of how they cover this story. They both give mention to George W. Bush and, in a way, criticize him. The Economist says that President Obama seems more fiscally honest than George W. Bush, and The Asahi Shimbun mentions that George W. Bush had overused the phrase “the war on terror,” something which President Obama did not do. Other than this, these two newspapers (from two different nations) cover the story completely differently. The Economist does not show much support for President Obama’s budget plan. It states, “Despite his inspiring rhetoric, Mr. Obama's plans for dealing with those long-term obligations have been frustratingly vague.” It says that even though President Obama has called on Americans to address the tremendous costs of health care, he plans to spend billions more, not less. It also says, “He reportedly abandoned support for a commission to restore solvency to Social Security, the public-pension system, because congressional Democrats objected to this loss of their authority.” Finally, the article continues to reflect negatively on President Obama’s actions (has a terribly negative mood) by going on to say that he had a great opportunity to introduce the idea of the rich, multinational corporations and carbon-emitters paying higher taxes as part of a broad reform of a monstrously inefficient tax system (something which The Economist says would make the economy more productive), but passed on the opportunity.

  16. Part 2 of 2:

On the other hand, The Asahi Shimbun (the Japanese newspaper) reflects differently on President Obama’s budget plan. It is completely in favor of the plan and says, “[Obama] deserves applause for the swift enactment of economic stimulus measures worth $787 billion (some 74 trillion yen), one of the biggest packages in U.S. history.” The newspaper mentions that President Obama has also announced a plan to stabilize the weakened banking system and stop foreclosure on homes. Moreover, the newspaper also clearly says that they welcome his basic foreign policy stand and mention that President Obama said that “a new era of engagement has begun.” They end up by clearly demonstrating their support for President Obama’s budget plan by saying, “Obama's political approach appears to be treading carefully in pursuing his policy goals while making tenacious efforts to win over opponents for bipartisan unity. We hope he will clearly point the way toward a new future for America as he deals with many tough decisions.” WorldPress truly is an amazing source of information. This article more than demonstrates how effective WorldPress can be at showing different perspectives of any issue. WorldPress truly is tremendous in developing global awareness, and it is a tool that any true global leader can, and should, utilize in his/her everyday life.

  17. Asharq Al-Awsat, Pan Arab daily, London, England. DMeurope, Online news portal, Amsterdam, Netherlands. India Express, News Portal, Mumbai, India. Although very simple, these publications are useful for information. In some circumstances, a citizen may not have time to read a global issue thoroughly but they would like to be informed of it. These publications are just the right solution for a busy day. They explain the issue and they give the most important views. Some of these publications give their opinion on how a global issue is affecting their country as well as the one they are informing about. The issue may be making or breaking their economy, their social status in the world, and their political views as well.

Many people may think that just because a global issue is explained in such a simple matter that the publication is not explaining or stating all the information of a situation.

On the contrary, it is. These simple publications are just pin-pointing the most important parts of the issue without talking tooo much or providing any biased opinion. This does not mean that when a publication is more than two pages that it is not useful or it is biased it's just that they are more thorough with the issue which is useful when it comes to solving the issue but not when a citizen is informed of an issue.

Then on the other end, there are those citizens that are excited and look foward to learning more of the issue and when they pick up a publication or a newspaper, they would like to read of the issue and know all the information they can without digging for it elsewhere.

All in all, these three publications were the ones that best suited me because they made me understand the issue without having to read too much and comprehend how it is affecting their country as well as the one they are describing that has the issue. It is not that I am not interested in the global issues it's just that many people overlook these newspapes and think they are of no use when in other parts of the world, that is all the information they have access to unless they use the internet.

  19. After exploring and analyzing three publications from different geographical areas CNN.U.S., The Australian, and Euro news, I have come to the conclusion that the most advantageous publication has been CNN.U.S. This publication is extremely well put together and there are headlines from all over the world, it is not one of those publications with few information on other countries in the world. Surfing through this website is beneficial because if you want to keep updated on what is happening world wide this is the website to go to. Not only is it reliable on information it is also speedy because the resources are straight to the point and there is not beating around the bush. In comparison to The Australian and Euro news, The Australian came awfully close to CNN.U.S. However, The Australian publication was not as speedy when it came to finding the information you wanted to know, it has less categories, and less topics. Euro news was definitely my least favorite out of the three publications it barely has information on places other than Europe, and to find information on wheat is happening in other places worldwide you would have to really search the web, which is really time consuming. When I compared an article I found, I found it in all publications with just different titles, as well as with the same ideas and facts. The article was “Silvio Berlusconi left bloodied after rally attack”.

  20. The World Press is a website that provides its users with the ability to view many stories covered by a large amount of publications around the world. Therefore students are able to read the same topics covered by different publications from different countries. When doing this, one can further understand the opinion of a certain country on an issue by comparing and contrasting the way the publications are presented. Also, students are able to remove bias from these stories, because as they read both publications they will learn to distinguish from opinion and fact.
People’s Daily Online, a Chinese news website covered a story on the British Prime minister and his visit to Afghanistan. The story however was quite short and only covered the basic information. In the story the writer, Xinhua, mentions that the Prime minister (Gordon Brown) arrived at Afghanistan without any previous advisement, and what he did while he was there. The reporter however claimed that her source of information, a spokesman for the presidential palace did not give anymore information other than the fact that he had arrived at Afghanistan by surprise. She then went onto mention a few facts on the British army’s purpose in Afghanistan and ended the article mentioning the few prime ministers which have attended Afghanistan.
The Guardian, a British website, also covered the same story however in a very different manner. This British publication wrote a long extensive article on the Prime minister’s visit including the information presented in the Chinese publication plus a lot more. This publication even included a picture of the British prime minister as he was arriving at Afghanistan. The article then went on to cover various statements by the prime minister as well as a detailed explanation on what the he day by day. There were also a few statements mentioned by Afghanistan’s president in reference to the British soldiers and their casualties. Overall, the British publication covers the prime minister’s visit to Afghanistan in more detail. This however may be due to the fact that the prime minister involved in the story is British and the publication which covers the story in more detail is also British. This shows that although both publications cover the same basic facts, The British publication believes this story is more important than the Chinese publication. One is then therefore able to conclude that publications of a particular country will cover a story that involves their nation more thoroughly.

  21. The Copenhagen issue is very big world wide. Fiji and the United Nations both have different views regarding this issue. Fiji Times expresses their views on the matter while Irin News (United Nations) expresses their views. Their views clash against each other every now and again. Fiji Times believes that the way Copenhagen is looking; it is not on the right track. It is not looking too good for the climate problem in Copenhagen. The leaders of the world were supposed to come to a conclusion as to what they are going to do with the climate change situation. The United Nations are not seeing eye to eye with this decision. They believe the situation is terrible but they have found refuge for the people displaced because of the climate change. None of the leaders have opposed this movement. The United Nations is looking more optimistic than Fiji. Fiji Times has a pessimistic view and only sees how the climate is damaging the area. However they do state that “There had been "promising movement" on how to ensure forests were used to tackle climate change, and countries had agreed there should be a greater focus on adapting to climate change that could not be avoided.” This is really the only positive thing they say and it does agree with the United Nations at this point. The UN is doing everything they can to provide for the less fortunate in the climate change. Fiji does not express what they are doing. Irin Newspaper provides more information than does Fiji Times. the copenhagen issue is in a terrible state and the U.N is more realistic than is the Fiji Times. I believe it is a better source.

  22. After analyzing carefully three completely different publications, different on both aspects: Region and Opinion; I finally made my decision on choosing who is in my opinion the best orientated and reliable source around the world. The Trinidad and Tobago Guardian, The Irish Examiner, and The Assam Tribune (India) where the three sources I used to reflect about one of the issues mentioned in the World Press website. In my opinion, The Assam Tribune was far more reliable than the other two. The Assam Tribune provides the reader with detailed information and educated points of view. This publication has something many others do not have, which is that they inform us about events that take place in their region or area. Many others like The Irish Examiner only focus about the United States of America and what is taking place there. Since these other publications only inform their readers about the United States of America and not their region or area, they deviate the point of the article. Also, The Assam Tribune does not try to draw their readers’ attention by telling false statements or by just analyzing topics that do not relate to their area. The other two usually do this, making the publications inaccurate and unreliable. Last but not least, The Assam Tribune presents accurate information with distinct, educated point of views which lets the reader know what is really happening around the world and what other global citizens have on their minds at that time.

  23. The WorldPress link does indeed prove to be very useful and effective in its purpose. It provides different stories, opinions, analysis, from several different regions of the Earth. The website allows readers to go in depth with issues posted from Asia, all the way to the Americas. The different viewpoints allows a reader to in actuality see the different perspectives of people from different locations on the earth. This is most definitely useful when comparing and contrasting perspectives from different areas on the globe, as it is not only descriptive but as well accurate when attempting to analyze ones outlook on a particular topic. I used two different articles on WorldPress to prove the ease when comparing and contrasting through the use of this sites vast amount of articles - these articles were " Viewpoints: The Battle over Honduras" by WorldPress.org which is essentially a combination of numerous viewpoints around the globe on the issue of President Manuel Zelaya's removal, the second article was to gain knowledge on the topic this was "Honduras Coup D'état" by Anton Caragea which essentially informed the reader of the situation that took place July of 2009 in Honduras.
Through both of these articles I was enabled to not only understand the situation at hand within Honduras which was that their President had been deposed, but as well as different countries (regions) across the worlds stances on the situation and how they felt about it. What was occurring in Honduras during that time was essentially that President Manuel Zelaya had been deposed from the Honduran Presidential Palace - 300 military entered the Palace, disarmed the Presidential Guard and arrested the President. The reason for his arrest however is all but legit. The issue at hand was that people, in specific the rich people of Honduras did not like the reforms that he was making for the country. The reason being is because the rich people owned the majority of Honduran land, and his reforms had to do with trying to help the people in need by doing things such as encouraging the poor to engage in agriculture or alternative economic sectors. President Zelaya also had constitutional reforms where he tried to shape the constitution in a manner that had less influence of military dictatorship by doing things such as extending presidential terms if voted- he also had moral reforms where he attempted to balance out fortunes of people who don't deserve it such as the high state officials. All these reforms only angered the rich and wealthy leading to his arrest. However the Honduran people as well as different regions across the world don't agree with what occurred and want President Zelaya restored to power.

  24. PART TWO

The first article I chose can depict to the reader the interpretation that region of the world had with the Zelayas situation, as well as that the reader can through tone analyze and understand the position that region of the globe takes towards the situation (i.e. how they feel about it). One of the reactions was from "Venezuela - Latin America Herald Tribune (July 5)" which felt that because of the situation they are being treated falsely due to the fact that the World Bank is withholding $270 million in loans to Central American nations, as well as and the Inter-American Development Bank putting $450 million on hold due to the situation. This of course is bad for countries in the Central and Southern Americas as it is a generally poorer area of the globe and a hold back that large could take a grand impact on economies. However the Venezuelan perspective also appears to lean towards the side that the movement wasn't tragic but at the same time is not supported by them; leaning towards a general opposition of the event. On another part of the globe an alternative reaction from " Australia - The Sunday Morning Herald (July 5)" shows the reader a general description of the events that followed after Zelaya's removal from office, speaking of things such as why Honduras was expulsed from O.A.S. and that the majority of the members agreed to their removal due to the unconstitutional interruption of democratic order. This article shows the different reactions of many different publications worldwide. However by choosing reactions from a country that's rather close to the matter at hand, and another that's quite far shows the urgency of the matter on a global level. Of course it is shown that Venezuela doesn't like the situation as it affects them negatively, thus supporting the reason for their general opposition to the situation. Conversely, Australia only gives a general report on the situation and not a reflection on this situation affects them - and this is because in fact it doesn't affect them whatsoever; thus supporting the reason as to why they don't oppose the situation nor like it, but simply report on it.
WorldPress.org can provide many instances where it proves to be useful as shown above. Through the use of different reactions of in different global regions I was able to determine that the scenario wasn't a major issue on a global scale, as well as the opinions and how it affects different areas dependant on their connections and distance from the actual originating point of conflict. WorldPress most definitely proves to be an excellent tool for the comparison and contrast of opinions on ONE topic - through the spectrum of an entire global community.

  25. People all around the world need to be informed of what is going on and that is why they have their own newspapers. The world press really impressed me because it has a little bit of everything and lets you know what is happening every step of the way. But the major newspapers that have impressed me along the way are BBC, New York Times and the Australian newspaper.
Most of the newspapers have a lot of information but the ones that interested me the most was BBC because it gives their own point of views and other peoples and also because it shows the news that are going around the world which to me it matters the most, it keeps you updated with the most important subjects that are occurring daily. It has the 32 different languages that you can choose which shows you that it is a global newspaper.
On the other hand, the Australia.com.au interested me because it shows also the issues that are going around the world in the section of “the wall street journal” it even has a chart that has all ORDS and different article of economic problems next to it. This website also has different views from people about the issues that are going around and portrays the United States as the positive one of the situation of the issue with Iran. It gives many example of why they think it is like that and includes the pictures of the person they are talking about.
While the New York Times is not one of my favorites since it has the different articles almost are not very organized. But it has just like the other two newspapers the issues going around in the world and this newspaper has different opinions on the Afghanistan issue and how they can solve it but the articles in contrast to The Australian portrays Iran as the negative country and the United States as the positive one. Just like the BBC this newspapers has various advertisements if you are interested in traveling or technology etc.To me the world press is great because it shows what is happening globally and does not take a side it shows the different opinions but not with choosing a side. It helps us be aware and that is very important for everybody.

  26. Around the world there are different newspapers to inform people in that country. The newspaper can have news about what is going on in that country and also news about other countries. There are also different publications that inform people such as the BBC, New York Times, and Shanghai Daily. I was impressed by these three publications after searching through their websites. The BBC gives a lot of in detail information about a story or news. It provides the reader without any bias and backs up their information. This can lead the reader to come up with his or her own opinion about the issue due to gathered information from the publication. The BBC gives the reader the story from a different point of view. The BBC also has in depth detailed information about the country, language, geography, TV channels, etc. It provides background information about that country and can serve as a foundation to build information on.
The New York Times is from the USA, our country. The New York Times not only provides us with information and news about the USA but also has news about other countries such as China or Africa. The New York Times provides us with news about other countries and news about our home, the USA. We get to see how news and activities are different in countries. The New York Times home page seems to be based on their newspaper and so looks like a newspaper, so if one knows how to manage a newspaper then their website will be easy to roam.
Shanghai Daily is another publication that I found was impressive. It provides us with metro, business, national, world, sports, feature and opinion. It gives us news that is going on in Shanghai and how it is affecting Shanghai but it also gives us news about other countries such as the USA. The reader can get different points of view form the Shanghai Daily. It gives us different news that is going on in Shanghai and also around them such as in Japan. All of these publications do the same thing, provide us with different stories from their point of view. These are important to get different information based on bias and point of view.

  27. Wordpress.org is a magnificent resource, although personally I didn’t expect much out of it. I expected to find a web page where accessing the media of other parts of the world would be troublesome and difficult. However I was surprised to find that the exact opposite was true. The navigation of Worldpress.org was so facile and simple, that I was able to find articles about President Obama’s plan to send troops to Afghanistan from both an English and an Afghanistan news source. I found an article titled “Afghanistan Ambassador Speaks Out On U.S. Troop Surge” from the “e-Ariana” (an online media publication from Afghanistan), and I also found an article titled “Obama, the worried warrior” from the british news source “The Economist”. When I read both articles I found much to compare. To start with I found that the worries of the Afghanistanian article, and of the British article were quite different. The article from Afghanastan showed how Afghanistan worries not about the fact that the troops are coming, but at the possibility that their efforst wont succeed against the Taliban and Al Quaeda not worrying about the time constraints or the number of troops.
However the British paper pointed out how it seems a mistake to send so many troops after all this time, and further all sending them with a time constraint that could mean a definite loss for the US in this war. The British Newspaper seemed to disapprove of the US’s actions being an outside player, and seemed to make a point that President Obama had the right intentions but definitely the wrong strategy. Something that the paper from Afghanistan failed to do, as it expressed relief at the support of a powerful country against powerful enemies. It didn’t question the intentions or strategy rather it just showed the gratitude that the public felt at the fact that it was receiving aid in an hour of desperation. The difference between the perspectives of both papers showed me how, although the world discusses similar topics. The involvement of need, emotions, judgment, and pride shape the perspective of the media. As the British paper was quite quick to judge President Obama, instead of admiring his intentions, while the paper from Afghanistan did the exact opposite.

  28. One parallel factor that can be found in each corner of our world is the media. The media is something that has always been a part of our any society, from the ancient word of mouth, to the very modern sources of the internet. Each region of the world has its own media along with the global media, and one of the variables that make news or information acknowledged is its appeal to each individual person. I myself found the “The New York Times”, “The Australian”, and “China Daily” as the most appealing news sources.

“Population control called key to deal”
This article found from the popular newspaper found in China, called the China Daily, was one of the articles which I found the most interesting because of the fact it touched a topic which China seems to be dealing with for quite some time. China has always had a problem with over population, yet other countries of equal size and development are not going through the same process. Why is this? The fact that the answer to a question that has puzzled me, and many other people, and to what they were going to do about it was reason enough to run the mouse over the link and press the right hand button. It was also appealing because it was short and sweet.

“US rejects Iran offer to swap nuclear fuel”
Now this article was found in the newspaper from Australia called “The Australian” When i found this article, what loured me most to it was the fact that this country which was completely on the other side of the world, was talking about countries that where practically in another universe. Also questions like, “why do they care?”, and “How would they know?” popped into my head at first glance and was one of the things that made me curious to what this they would have to say. In addition to that, what surprised me the most was the fact that usually only America and Iraq contribute article like these because they are the ones most affected, and are the countries going through the problem, but then on the other hand, because of this they may be bias; the side of a non bias country is best.

“Viruses That Leave Victims Red in the Face book”
This article was found in The New York Times website; this newspaper published right here in the United States. What appealed to me from this article was not because Facebook is so popular between the teens these days, but because it is a type a media within itself and very powerful even if it doesn’t seem like it. The fact that one person or a group of people gathered the power over Facebook to control it is a major deal because this could only be the beginning. In conclusion, overall what each of these articles did to appeal me was that they triggered my interest by relating to me, and a turning on my curiosity.

  29. One topic that is seemingly on no ones mind, yet on everyone’s mind seems to be the idea of nuclear activity. As it is a topic of curiosity to me, I decided to see what the world away from America has to say of the subject. In Australia, as I found on one of their newspapers while searching the World Press, is having some struggles when it comes to the exchanged of nuclear sources. In two articles, it seems to show they are having uranium exchanges with countries like China and India.
In the other side of the world’s hemisphere, in Asia, particularly North Korea having many opinions shot at them for many reasons. The entire world seems to have a magnified glass pointed on North Korea since their recent proposal on the “nuclear position”. On several news articles found on the world press website, there are countless opinions of countries on North Korea; from America to Japan to Spain to India and China, just to mention a few.
All in all, the world press system, I guessed you could call it, gives you a wide range of ideas on what could be the same topic, and widens your view on the world and that which goes on in it everyday.

  30. Option A
Africa-Public Schools in Sierra Leone Gasping for Life Support

“Public Schools in Sierra Leone Gasping for Life Support” Was the first article I chose . I thought of it as a very important issue to portray on World press’ division on Africa. Public education is at very risk because of the lack of tools and resources for basic standards of education. Especially to those that are living under low circumstances and poverty. Many teachers are not being paid fairly for the amount of hours being worked. So then many people start asking themselves : Where are the funds dedicated for education in the country are being administered? Many agree that the funds are not quite enough for a country that has a lot poverty and therefore even the sources supplied by the government are not sufficient.

Government corruption also has to do with not providing the children the appropriate education. Not only poverty consist of not giving them the right education but also the corruption. We all need to become aware of the immense impact of this disparity on society. Children now with not a good education is not to expect a very developed future. Illiteracy rates will increase if they realize their education is not useful because they will start caring less and soon will drop out. They will start to work and earn money to help out their families on the economic issues.
Asia-Pacific- Taiwan's Vision for International Climate Change Cooperation

Now, we move on to governmental cooperation on International climate change. “Taiwan's Vision for International Climate Change Cooperation” shows us their approach on the issue. Taiwan wants to work with the international community to imply modern technologies and create policies to help our environment. I decide to chose this article mainly because I believe that climate is an issue that every citizen of this planet should be aware of. Everyone must take action to make this planet a better place to live. As far as we know planet Earth is the only planet which is conditioned to hold human life, therefore this issue should go unnoticed. Now we need to deal with global warming as a consequence of our actions. We must seek solutions to not make it worst. I believe we haven’t paid much attention to this matter. Have we thought of its affects later on in the future? Until know we know the ice caps are melting and the heat is increasing in other areas and regions. Environmental issues also affects the extinction of others. Without these animals we will have drastic changes that we will need to face. Many people disregard these issues right after they are alarmed by the situation and then just forget. Taiwan’s percentage of awareness is increasing which will help everyone very much. Their ideas are being presented and taken into matters. But just Taiwan is not enough. We must all take action to for us to all work more effectively and reduce global damage in our environment.

    Street: Pro-Israel, Pro-Palestine, Pro-Peace

Lastly, I decided to choose the article on J Street, A U.S. nonprofit advocacy group, that is requesting Washington to act upon the Israel- Palestine problem. For the first time a Pro-Israel group had gathered in Washington to express their opinions on policies of Israel’s government. The news of the success of this group caught my attention because it is not common for a group to be Pro-Israel, Pro-Palestine, and Pro-peace. Overall we learn that the intentions of this group are to bring peace to the conflict by asking President Barack Obama to get involved.

  31. The two articles I will be comparing and contrasting is “Attack leaves Italian Premier Berlusconi with broken nose” in the Malaysian Star and “Italian PM Bloodied After Being Attacked” in Sky News. The first article is obviously from Malaysia and the second article comes from the United Kingdom. There is one significant difference in the articles and that is in the Malaysian Star article it was said that the PM was confused and unsure of what occurred to him after the attack, while Sky News quoted the PM saying that he was fine after the attack. Another minor difference that might have been picked up is that the Malaysian star is more blunt about presenting the fact that the PM of Italian is suffering under great controversy for his sex scandal while Sky News mentions it towards the end indirectly by stating it as allegations on his private life. They are similar because they present the same information in different words and order. The information was neither distorted or used against anyone else.

  32. World Press is one of the best ways to have different perspectives of various topics from all over the globe. It provides you with a variety of news topics to choose from and to investigate from and allows us to explore different sides of a story. I decided to search upon the topic of impunity and found two articles that interested me. One was “The Break from Impunity in Argentina” from South America. The other was “Bastion of Impunity, Mirage of Reform” from the Middle East.
Both of these articles agreed on one thing. They wanted to get rid of impunities. They both agreed that it was not fair to allow those who murder and kidnap people to be exempted from punishment. Both Argentina and the Middle East are trying to rid themselves this act of impunity to create more fairness in law. Both articles agreed that all that impunities are doing is allowing people to murder masses of other people, kidnapping and keeping them hostage. They agreed that they would no longer accept impunities of any kind.
Argentina has been able to start getting rid of such impunity by finally hearing protesters and groups against these acts and finally opening up to them. The Middle East is fighting with impunities by also helping to add to human rights. There really is no difference between both perspectives since it seems that both Argentina and the Middle East feel strongly about how unnecessary these impunities are and how they are harming society. However, due to seeing the point of view of two different places suffering from the same thing allows us to explore different perspectives and to understand how each place is trying to get rid of these impunities. The World Press allows us to see and understand these different perspectives allowing us to see what others feel about certain things.

  33. WorldPress, a very informative and useful source of international information, revealed to me two very important articles addressing climate change from two different publications. One article, “A New Climate of Cool?”, describes the hardships that we might have to face if we keep destroying our environment and causing climate change. It describes how we’re going to lose many different species of animals due to the rising sea levels because of the melting ice caps. On the other hand, the other article, “Taiwan’s Vision for International Climate Change Cooperation”, discusses how Taiwan envisions humankind working together in order to reduce or even possibly end climate change due to pollution. “A New Climate of Cool?” is a North American article while “Taiwan’s Vision for International Climate Change Cooperation” is an Asian-Pacific article. In this article, it seems as if the author wants the world to work together to solve the problem of climate change. The same goes for the article “A New Climate of Cool?”. Although these two articles are very different in the point they are trying to get across, they are very similar in the fact that they both speak about climate change and how it is something that must be dealt with quickly.

  34. Of course, this website is a great website to collect specific information and news, but I recognized articles in this website that had a main focus towards my three regions of preference: Europe, Africa, and Asia-Pacific.
In the Europe section, there was an article called “Students Fret Over Loan Program in Lithuania”. It regarded student loans and the struggles Lithuania has over the issue with money and how students will not be able to afford it and will end up in bankruptcy for applying to use one. The reason it caught my attention is because it identifies how it is not only the United States that is going through and economic struggle. It makes me realize the outside world and how the economic struggles has faced them, especially for students. Students over in the United States are going through the same things as Europe is. Another thing I do like about this article is that it gives possible solutions to this specific issue, meaning there is some thought to this current situation and it does need to be resolved.
In the Africa section, there was an article called “Book Review: ‘The Candy Girl’”. It spoke about a woman named Marcella Camara-Macauley who was born with poliovirus. She ended up writing a children’s book that teaches the golden rule to all young children. I felt this article connected with me inspirationally on how she went through so much in her life yet she gives her all to publish a book for children. I believe it is important to teach children the fundamentals as a human being, and the golden rule is one of them. The fact that this story captivated someone out of the highly developed countries and recognized them in such a huge way is incredible. It shined this person immensely and although she has an illness, she was able to conquer an amazing idea.
In the Asia-Pacific section, there was an article called “Taiwan’s Vision for International Climate Change Cooperation”. It catched my attention when I noticed the words “vision” and “climate change” since it is a major issue in the world. What I like about this article is that it involves no negative feedback. All it talks about is the positive approach towards climate change and what Taiwan is going to do about it. The positive aspect of it gives me the sense that climate change will be resolved no matter what and there should be no doubts about it, although there are. It gives me an open mind to their approach now that they use a positive discussion towards it.

  35. The World Press is an incredible information highway with regards to gaining access to the world's media issues. The fact that people are now able to acquire publications in Africa and Asia under the same circumstances is simply unbelievable. When comparing two different publications in two of the different regions revolving around the general issue of HIV/AIDS and discussing both the regions of Africa and Asia-Pacific (particularly India) there were very different perspectives and understandings in the articles. However there were some similarities among the publications and they both share a common ground on the serious tension that HIV/AIDS distributes.
    Africa
The article is called "H.I.V. and AIDS in Africa: Ten Lessons from the Field" by Rhoi Wangila and Chinua Akukwe. It is a very emotional and critical article that genuinely reaches in to the intensifying terror that these diseases have had on the toll of African civilians. The article also concerns the commitment that the two authors have had on the efforts of attempting to make a difference and dent in this ongoing issue. It uses statistics of how millions of Africans lack the benefits of pharmaceutical attention and care and that there have been no true actions to change these statistics and reverse them for the better. The authors take not of the lack of international efforts to the African families and help them. Plus the children feel abandoned and alienated in a world that will not help them or attempt to help them; they are all alone and do not have the resources to survive in normal living conditions. This article truly highlights the bleak injustice against Africa and the millions suffering from these diseases.
    Asia-Pacific
The article is called "Grassroots HIV/AIDS Activism Growing" by Manju Parikh. This article shows how powerful the presence of the diseases in the country of India. It also acknowledges that India has surpassed South Africa for having the most people living with HIV/AIDS. The author shows how deeply terrible he feels towards the issue. He discusses his perilous journey and experiences in trying to make a difference in India. This article however shows the government intervention that has been made to put an end to the misery of these people in need. It shows the programs and campaigns that have been in effect to make a difference in the region. There are actions being made to stop this with the support of the government that will help limit the growing capacity of people living with these diseases.
These articles have their similarities. Both of the authors in these publications have had the experiences of trying to help in the ongoing initiative. Both the articles agree in the intensity of the issue and represent the terror of which it displays. The main difference between the two articles is that the publication in India shows the government action to try and stop the terror while the publication in Africa lacks the presence of government or international help.

  36. The worldpress.org site is a very fascinating one. It had many articles from each region to choose from. The articles are mostly unbiased and different points of views are given as well. It was also very easy to navigate. The regions and articles I chose were Africa with “Africa-Public Schools in Sierra Leone Gasping for Life Support”, Asia-Pacific with “China: Media Summit Participants Should Push for Press Freedom”, and Americas with “J Street: Pro-Israel, Pro-Palestine, Pro-Peace”.

Africa – Africa-Pulic Schools in Sierra Leone Gasping for Life Support

Public schools are in danger because of the lack of basic needs for education such as books and paper. The schools cannot give the basic tools that are used for teaching. Also, it says that the teachers and instructors are not being treated well and cannot be paid for long periods of time. About the whole land of Sierra Leone is living in poverty so it makes it even harder for funds to come across. It seems like no money is being given to the public schools from the government, but in other uses. It is important for the funds to be sent to public schools so that people can have jobs and children can have education. Public schools are already overpopulated since it is free, and without the requirements that it needs to bring it is not useful for students that do not have the money for an education. This article interested me because it involved schools and it concerns me to see the negative economy influencing funds to schools.

Asia-Pacific – China: Media Summit Participants Should Push for Press Freedom

The World Media Summit wants press freedom in China. It shows that the rights of the press and views should be showed. It can be said that the Chinese and other places of the world want everyone to have the basic human rights and freedoms. It can start with a simple freedom of the press to a freedom of about anything. Since the World Media Summit is being held in Beijing, then the participants attending it should use the opportunity to encourage the Chinese of press freedom. The Chinese government and people should not discourage the press as it can provide much information about many events that happen in the world. They should not be rejecting it, but embracing the ideas news of their citizens. The article is also very reliable and seems to be mostly unbiased. This article interested me because it is part of human rights, which, in liberty, I have. I also believe everyone from every part of the world should have every right and equality to anything.

    Americas – J Street: Pro-Israel, Pro-Palestine, Pro-Peace

A United States non-profit advocacy group wants peace beetween the Israelis and the Palestinians. They have been in an prolonged struggle about border security, water, land rights, and other key issues. The group wants Washington DC to act on the ongoing conflict. This is a very authentic article as not many have been pro-Israel, pro-Palestine, and especially pro-peace. The overall purpose and aim of the group is to bring peace to the two countries by asking U.S. President Obama to act upon it as well. This will be essential and give a boost to worldwide peace. I enjoy this article because I do believe in order to resolve any world issues, we must first find world peace.

Out of all the articles I chose, I prefer the one from the Americas. I do not choose it because it is from there, but because it gives an idealistic view that is very possible and it can contribute to world peace. With world peace, we can start resolving many of the world issues that planet Earth has. With all the nations of the world working and agreeing together, it becomes more easier to olve the issues, rather than a few nations acting on them. Two heads are better than one, so about 190 nations are better than one nation.

  37. I found the WorldPress website to be useful for looking up information about newspapers around the world.
The issue I chose was the GCC summit in Kuwait. I used the sites Xinhua.net, a Chinese website, and Arabnews.com, a Middle Eastern website of unspecified origin.
Xinhua’s article placed a lot of emphasis on the Dubai debt crisis. It is even the title of the article: “Unified currency, Dubai debt woes to top GCC summit: Kuwait official.” The article said that the big issues were, of course, Dubai’s debt crisis and a monetary union council made by Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain. The idea behind the unified currency would be to have a Euro-style currency to “secure economic integrity.” The article mentioned Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the Saudi-Yemen border issue, but did not go in-depth into them, as opposed to how the article explained the Dubai debt crisis and the Gulf monetary union.
In contrast, the Arab News reports that the issues are “Iran’s nuclear standoff, terrorism, the Middle East peace process, the Saudi position on intruders, a common currency and ways of further strengthening ties among member states of the GCC”. It places more emphasis on the Saudi-Yemen border issue and the Palestinian territories than the Xinhua article does. The Dubai debt crisis is said to be the “unsettled backdrop” for the conference, but the monetary union is mentioned only in passing and not delved into.
It’s interesting how the two articles handled the issues. Xinhua placed more emphasis on potentially long-term problems, like a single monetary policy and Dubai’s debt, while Arab News placed more emphasis on more immediate problems, like a border issue. Both articles mention Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the Palestinian problems, though neither delves into the issues. The articles differed mainly in covering the content; one article covered a certain part of the conference more than the other article. There was not much difference, but the difference that was there was interesting. The news site covering a topic “closer to home” explored issues which are more likely to affect its readers, while the more foreign news site looked at the potential long term issues which could affect its readers. The two news sites chose to cover issues which presumably resonated more with their target audience. This has interesting implications for news – perhaps people should read more foreign news in order to learn about aspects which were previously unconsidered.

  38. The compared two countries on how they wrote about Obama winning the elections. Rome and Hong Kong. Rome concentrated on how both opponents were good and how both strategies were for the candidates. Then Rome talked on how McCain and Obama talk about the world relationship with the world. They stated Obama had a more general view on the Earth while McCain concentrated on one thing.
Hong Kong newspaper concentrated on how much the election is going to affect Iran’s election. When Obama got elected they expect a different type of an election to happen and a different type of a result on the election. Then they right about how the Iran government feels about the election and they right how the Iran government felt about both candidates.

  39. After going to worldpress.org and examining the publishers of three different regions I came to the conclusion that in America the publication that I liked the most was the New York Times, in Europe the BBC, and the last publication that attracted my attention was the Australian publication.
I preferred the New York Times the most because it gave a large quantity of news that was also very reliable. Since I live in America this website greatly suits be because it gives me a large amount of information that is accruing in my country, but in an accurate and reliable manner. In the region of Europe I preferred the BBC over all other publications, even more that the New York Times. I also gives large amounts of reliable information but its website is organized in a much more simpler manner making it easy to find what you need. What grasped my attention about the Australian was that it had news article that didn’t just concentrate of Australia but on subjects happening in other parts of the world. The New York Times does not do this it mainly concentrates on subjects pertaining to the US.

  40. I analyzed different sources or publications, to be more specific publications from around the world and after brainstorming an endless blizzard in my brain I finally decided to pick the right publication, the one that I thought to be the appropriate one. I analyzed three different publications from around the world. These were: The Australian, Euro news, and CNN. I have come to the conclusion that the most advantageous publication has been CNN.U.S. This publication possessed the most detailed information and accurate and reliable opinions. These educated opinions from distinct global citizens with different perspectives. This publication provides us with daily updates about certain issues taking place around the world. Another aspect that I liked about this source is that it goes how Cubans say “directo al grano”, in other words when it presents an article it goes straight to the point without presenting additional information, which the reader will not care about. The other two sources did not receive as much credit as CNN because I did not find them as useful, reliable or educated as CNN.

  43. The first article I chose was “Public Schools in Sierra Leone Gasping for Life Support”. As soon as I saw the article on Worldpress’ division on Africa I knew that this was a significant issue that should be further depicted. Throughout the article the issue of Government’s inefficiency in regards to education is discussed. Public school education is at risk due to lack of resources implemented to education. Many schools are unable to provide basic standards of education to its students especially the most needed ones living in poverty. The article also mentions that the treatment of teachers is not adequate and that many are not paid for long periods of time. So then the question arises; Where are the funds dedicated for education in the country are being administered? We may discuss that the funds are not enough for a country that has a vast percentage of poverty and therefore even the sources supplied by the government are insufficient. However, it is not only the large amount of poverty that prevents for children to receive an appropriate education, but also the government corruption. It is evident that the few funds that the government provides to schools are distributed by an elite of people. Therefore, not reaching the schools and even leaving teachers without payment.
Now, it is important that we analyze the situation and become aware of the immense impact of this disparity on society. The children are the future and without education there is not much to be expected for development. If kids realize that their education is not going be use to them in life then they will decide to drop out and began to work to earn money to help their families. Now the problem with this is that the rates of illiteracy will increase therefore leading for poverty to increase as well.
On the other hand, professionals who dedicate themselves to educate are being mistreated and their work is not recognized. Teachers in some regions are expected to give the best of their knowledge to their students however the resources are not provided and their salaries are sometimes unacknowledged. Soon, these teachers will begin to shift fields due to their inability to hold a substantial lifestyle. When that occurs then the disadvantaged sections of society will have fewer reach to education and therefore low expectations in life. With all this said we cannot ignore the issue simply because it doesn’t directly affect us. People should be conscious these inequalities and take action to fix them.
Now, we will shift the topic from governmental involvement in education to governmental cooperation on International climate change. In this article titled “Taiwan's Vision for International Climate Change Cooperation”, we will learn about Taiwan’s approach to climate change. Taiwan has a vision in mind to work with the international community to imply modern technologies and create policies in the environmental protection infrastructure to help our environment.
I chose this article mainly because I believe that climate change due to global warming is a powerful issue that every member of planet Earth should take into account. As far as we know there are no other planets which are conditioned to hold human life, besides Earth. Therefore, we shouldn’t take this matter lightly or let it go unnoticed. It is something that we must take all into account since our planet is in danger due to our actions. We have polluted the environment and slowly made matters get worse by harming it with fumes and activities that deteriorate the ozone layer. Now we must deal with global warming as a consequence. But we cannot remain with our hands crossed and continue performing the activities that led to this issue in the first place. We must seek solutions such as eco-friendly alternatives in our daily lives that will reduce the rate of damage to our atmosphere.

  44. Perhaps, we haven’t paid enough attention to this matter. Have we thought of the long extend effects on us if we don’t do something about it? We already have evidence that the polar ice caps are melting due to the climate change and heat is greater in other regions. Some of the effects have shown to be decrease in animal populations and danger to the extinction of others. Again, we must feel affected even though we are not directly faced with the problem in or daily lives. Without the animals there will be a drastic change in our environment as all species depend upon each other. Where will the water melted from the icecaps go? Will it covers entire neighboring regions? Many predictions are made, but humans seem to be alerted by the situation on the moment and then forget how important it is.
Awareness is a big factor and in Taiwan the percentage of awareness has increased representing a step forward to the solution. Ideas are being presented and initiatives are being taken to tag the problem, however there is still much more to do. Action and care is expected from each of us and that’s why international cooperation will be needed in order to work together to effectively reduce the global damage in our environment.
Lastly, I decided to choose the article on J Street, A U.S. nonprofit advocacy group, that is requesting Washington to act upon the Israel- Palestine conflict. As I scrolled down the page, the news of the success of this group caught my attention. It is not common for a group to be Pro-Israel, Pro-Palestine, and Pro-peace. For the first time a Pro-Israel group had gathered in Washington to express their opinions on policies of Israel’s government. Overall we learn that the intentions of this group are to bring peace to the conflict by asking President Barack Obama to get involved.
After reading this article, I analyzed how there are still groups that want to deliver peace instead of fights. We always tend to look at the bad news in society and criticize everything that goes on, but perhaps we should pay attention as well to some news that maybe be positive in some ways. The fact that this group is pro both countries shows that an initiative for future peace is desired.
The attitude and support points of the group are very idealistic, but they recognize that nothing is impossible. Overall, what we most need in the world is peace cause without it we would come to an end. Fights for power, or quarrels over disagreements don’t lead to anything positive. Wars are not beneficial to either side cause both are affected by deaths and effects on society. If we realize how important peace is in the world perhaps we will be able to make wiser decisions and be more tolerable as individuals as well as a united nation.

  45. After visiting WorldPress for the first time I am completely marveled by the services it provides. I chose the region of Africa and found various articles. I decided that the article of “The Emerging Obama Doctrine on Africa” by Chinua Akukwe was the best one. If provides both the positive and negative outlooks on the desired doctrines expressed by both President Obama and Senator Clinton. It clearly demonstrates what the doctrine is made up of in five consecutive steps and provides the possible events that may interfere with their plans. For example it states that “In Ghana Obama spoke of the unique responsibility of young people in Africa to play decisive roles in Africa's renaissance” and also presents the fact that “The Obama Administration, after all, is busy with significant domestic matters at the moment, grappling with its national economy, healthcare and energy reforms”. Also it presents the viewpoint of the people and the viewpoint of the government. While the people of Africa are exited with the speeches the government has a “wait and see attitude” with the new Obama administration. Overall, this is a very good publication for this event.
After researching the region of Africa I continued to search in the region of Europe. The best article I found was “Grassroots Gone Dry” by Joshua Pringle. This article also reduces its bias and increases its validity. It resents the bad side of Osama’s enforcement in climate change and health reform but it also presents the reasons why it has happened. I personally think this article is the best because not only does it inform the reader but it urges the Obama administration to take charge of its promises and improve the American life.
Lastly, I researched the Middle East region and found a very explicit article on the Palestinians viewpoint of Obama’s peace talks. This article “Illusion of Obama's Peace Talks” by Latheef Farook speaks very clearly on how Israel feels about all these “changes” I think this is a very good article because the world has already heard of many articles that approve of Obamas actions but Humans need articles voicing opposing viewpoints as well. In order for the reader to form articulated arguments of how they feel about their government they should be able to have opinions of both sides available to them. I think The WorldPress overall makes an excellent job in providing resources which can allow us to become educated humans instead of bind sheep.

  46. Worldpress.org is a very well constructed tool for news data base searches. It is quick and easy to search for topics all around the world, hence the title, World Press. Due to the fact that because information was so easy to find, I was able to find an article from the economist (British perspective) and an article titled: “Al Qaeda offers 'condolences' for innocent victims” which gives the Afghanistan perspective of Obama’s plans with the U.S military groups. Obama has recently stated that he is going to obtain 30,000 troops and send them off to Afghanistan to establish order and justice and to control the government of that country by early 2010. However, by 2011 it is expected for the troops to be returning back home little by little from Afghanistan. The British article is entitled: “Obama, the worried warrior”. In this article the main points of Obamas’s speech are highlighted and ridiculed. It states that Obama has lost his sense of style when speaking, as in; he has lost his power of speech when delivering hope to the audience. It states that many Americans are in disagreements on what to do over this situation and that it is a ridiculous move to make when sending the troops and then bringing them back before the war could be won. In all, the British article outlines the faults in Obama’s plans, while that of Afghanistan’s perspectives sees his plan as a threat for Gadahn states: “Those who have made the foolish decision to stand with America and its allies in their losing war against Islam ... you have not only betrayed Islam and Muslims and left the fold of faith, but you have also caused the destabilization of nations and the displacement ... of thousands of weak and oppressed people.” In other words, it can be noted, that Afghanistan has a fear of being conquered by the United Sates and therefore threatens America and all their allies. Both articles discuss the points in Obama’s speech, while each interprets them differently than the other. On the other hand, the Afghanistan perspective if the situation is the fact that they apologized for all the murders there were because of all this, thus seize to think that America is going to over power their government.

  47. Albania went through their election on June 2009. the opposing parties were Democratic and Socialist.Albanian reporter Ledion Krisafi said both parties were looking for the majority vote. however the Democratic party has been seen to improve situations in Albania. This is shown because while the rest of the world is going through an economic crisis their GDP went up by 6%. In the united states what was mentioned about the Albanian elections were not mentioned what changes the Democratic party or Socialist will bring. Instead they refereed to talk about the corruption of its current government. Dan Bilefsky reported "Others are fed up in a country where Amnesty International says more than 18 percent of the population is estimated to live below the poverty line of $2 a day, and adequate healthcare often depends on a bribe."
Both of the articles reported the same thing but focused on the extreme of either positive or the negative side that the elections were to bring. The first article was from Albania and the other the NY times. Its often seen as the press around the world focus on what they feel the readers need to known.
